What Your New Manager Wants You To Know

The Associate Director Biomaterials and Drug Delivery leads, plans and executes research activities of developing novel biomaterials for use in next generation medical aesthetics and sustained drug delivery products via polymer synthesis, modification, formulation, fabrication, and characterization.

You Will
  • Be responsible for putting together detailed project plans including scientific rationales, technical approaches, milestone deliverables/timelines, as well as required resources and budgets. Manage 1-3 scientists and lead them to execute their experimental studies for the development of novel biomaterials. Applies scientific expertise in the innovation of in-house materials and the evaluation of external technologies. Generate new materials and formulations including desired design space and targeted prototypes. Drives technology development to support project development pipelines.
  • Organize, lead and participate in project team meetings to define and schedule project activities and review completed tasks. Communicate project status to project team leader, supervisor and other research managers, and/or R&D committees as appropriate. Prepare timeline and cost estimates of project activities for review by project team leader and functional managers to achieve realistic project completion dates.
  • Write, reviews and issues technical reports, technical memoranda and other documents for internal and external distribution. Generate ROI's and works closely with AbbVie patent counsel in generating IP documentation.
  • Represent the Biomaterials and Drug Delivery group to interface with cross functional groups. Will remain as an internal subject matter expert through the entire product development life cycle. May be responsible for supporting raw material efforts in choosing potential suppliers, qualifying incoming lots, developing proper analytical assays, and drafting of specifications.
  • Attend and participate in scientific meetings as AbbVie's representative to gain knowledge about new products or technologies pertinent to corporate business interest. Review and evaluate current technical and trade literature in order to maintain and extend technical competence. Communicate new compound, product, and technology related ideas to supervisor and other research managers to maintain and enhance AbbVie's position in the marketplace.



You Bring
  • Ph.D. level education in Biomaterials Science, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Bioengineering or related fields.
  • 5+ years of applicable experience, preferably industrial experience is required. Work experience involving biomaterials for medical device and/or drug delivery systems is essential.
  • Sound knowledge of structure-property relationships as it applies to both bulk and surface attributes of polymeric materials is also essential.
  • Experience in one or more of the following technology areas is desirable: biomedical material synthesis, cross-linked/modified polymers, hydrogels, biodegradable polymers or vehicles, biomaterial-tissue interfaces, polymer fabrication processes, drug delivery systems, and tissue scaffolding/engineering.
