DIRECTOR, CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications and Investor Relations, the Director of Corporate Communications will work closely with key internal and external stakeholders, and our communications agencies to drive increased awareness and visibility of Global Blood Therapeutics (GBT) and its mission. The position involves engaging key internal and external audiences, creating powerful messages, storylines and communications programs which drive awareness for GBT and its drug candidates. This position is based in South San Francisco, CA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

External Communications
  • Develop strategic and tactical plans that support the company's vision and corporate objectives
  • Develop and maintain high quality corporate communications materials including key message documents, Q&As, press releases, fact sheets, media pitches, speeches, etc
  • Prepare executives for media interviews and external speaking opportunities to help ensure key messages are consistently conveyed
  • Engage with external stakeholders on behalf of GBT including media, health professionals, patient groups, partners and others
  • Oversee strategy and process for GBT's corporate social channels
  • Serve as a main point of contact for communications agencies on day-to-day activities for the department.
  • Populate and maintain a corporate communications calendar
  • Provide team with market/industry intelligence by overseeing media monitoring process including distributing key news to extended leadership team
  • Represent department on and contribute to select internal committees, (e.g., Program Development Team, Advocacy)
  • Manage corporate website, including updating and editing
  • Partner with SVP and other internal functions to develop crisis/issues management plans and support communications on ad hoc issues
  • Work closely across Medical Affairs, Advocacy, Research & Development, Commercial, and Business Development teams to augment and complement their goals and objectives

Internal Communications
  • Serve as the main point of contact for employee communications
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to develop and execute strategies to maintain and strengthen company culture
  • Manage updating homepage and department page for intranet and serve as an internal expert for GBT's intranet site
  • Design and manage quarterly all-hands meetings and other internal events
  • Monitor and determine other create ways to enhance employee engagement and meet information needs

Product Communications
  • Gain disease and brand awareness through PR strategies
  • Leverage scientific and medical presentations to gain visibility and enhance the scientific reputation of GBT and its products
  • Serve as a primary contact for product related media inquiries and press opportunities, evaluating and/or pitching opportunities, contributing content and involving internal spokespeople as necessary
  • Develop consumer-facing PR strategies ahead of potential commercial launch, including creating relationships with key KOLs, their PR-departments and patients

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Business Administration or related area (science degree a plus)
  • 8 years of progressive experience in communications, investor relations (in-house or agency); experience in the life sciences field is strongly preferred
  • Experience interacting with and counseling senior executives
  • Demonstrated record of success within a company during period of growth or change; small public company experience a plus
  • Experience with media relations, proactive and reactive; established relationships with reporters a plus
  • Experience with social media strategy, tools and technologies (e.g., Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn)
  • Experience developing, writing and executing clear plans, timelines and budgets
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Self-starter with initiative and ability to execute once strategies are set
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong project management skills; highly organized and detailed-oriented
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Applications including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • 10-15% travel, includes occasional off-hours and weekend work for events and medical meetings
