Position Overview

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Scientist with a focus in Immunology for our Translational Medicine team in our San Francisco office.

This individual will assist in developing and applying biomarker strategies for candidate drug products from early development (pre-IND) through late stage development (Phase 3 and NDA filings). A strong immunology background is required, with immuno-oncology experience a plus. The Scientist should possess knowledge of relevant experimental biology techniques, possibly including: flow cytometry, molecular biology techniques, in vitro binding, biochemical and cell- based assays, pharmacologic dosing, disease model testing, PK and metabolism methodologies. The Scientist will participate in evaluation and recommendation of new biomarker technologies and interpret, communicate and analyze findings and documents according to approved Nektar policy. The individual would maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories by reviewing preclinical and clinical literature and may lead Translational Medicine sub-teams, as necessary. The Scientist may also mentor and guide junior scientists and manage research associates. This position contributes to and supports the company's research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.


Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought. Assists in developing clinical translational medicine plans, working cross-functionally to establish clinical protocols, and designing and analyzing clinical biomarker studies. Works on problems of diverse scope in which analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Normally receives no instructions on routine work, general instructions on new assignments and may provide guidance to junior level personnel. Synthesizes multiple data sources and draws general, non-obvious conclusions. Defines problems, develops approaches and develops experiments with sound judgment with minimal supervision. Uses professional concepts and scientific knowledge to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways. Participates in the development of patent applications. Participates in writing publications and making scientific presentations consistent with development strategies. Interfaces with various departments, customers and partners. Puts work practices in context with larger team. Coordinates activities with other team members. May assist with implementing organizational systems and projecting near-term resource requirements. May lead a small group, providing training as needed, and ensures adherence to company policies and quality requirements.


A PhD in a scientific discipline is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted.

A minimum of 2 years work experience in a research and/or development environment is required. Post-doctoral work may serve as experience. Exceptional non-PhDs with demonstrated capabilities and/or significant experience may also be considered.

  • Strong organizational skills are required.
  • Good computer skills are required, including a working knowledge of MS word, Excel, Powerpoint, GraphPad Prism and FlowJo software.
  • Experience working in an FDA regulated environment and knowledge of current GMPs as they apply to laboratory practices are highly desired.
  • Previous supervisory skills are a plus.
  • Must be willing to work as part of a team.
  • Must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
