The primary purpose of this position is the manufacturing operation and production of high quality drug substance and parenteral biologics products for commercial distribution and experimental/clinical runs. The Biologics Production Superintendent position is responsible of supervising a team of non-exempt biologics operators performing manufacturing activities in different areas and/or shifts within the AbbVie Biotechnology Ltd. (ABL) manufacturing organization. These operations are to be performed according to applicable SOPs, production control records, quality standards and established production schedule. The position ensures that manufacturing objectives are achieved and maintenance activities are conducted according to the schedule. Furthermore, the Biologics Production Superintendent ensures that the necessary resources are allocated per operation to maintain high manufacturing efficiency, provides support to continuous improvement programs, and anticipate and issue action plans that avoid process, equipment and/or environmental disruptions. Position requires hands on work with equipment, completion of production records, and attention to details in a manufacturing facility and knowledge of applicable regulations.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Responsible to plan and control the manufacturing operation to meet Plant throughput, maintaining cost and manpower utilization per established expectations.
  • Supervision and training of the non-exempt personnel assigned. Responsible of completing goals setting, performance evaluation, and development plans of direct reports.
  • Assure compliance with applicable Plant, Division, Corporate and Government Regulatory Agencies.
  • Anticipate and correct situations that affect the operating and environmental conditions for the people and the equipment. Provide technical assistance to the manufacturing areas, specifically the troubleshooting support of the manufacturing equipment and process events.
  • Assure proper verification of the materials to be used for the production activities.
  • Responsible to comply with AbbVie Policies and ABL plant procedures. Also, accountable of the execution, audit and timely correction of the manufacturing electronic or paper batch record discrepancies.
  • Accountable for the implementation of capital projects, related with cost reduction, yield improvement, energy conservation, product quality, safety, and industrial hygiene in order to improve the overall operations.
  • Assure that deviations from approved procedures are properly and promptly documented and investigated.
  • Through the Operations coordinator accomplish the daily operations to meet production schedule efficiency.
  • In the event of an emergency, the incumbent is to take all necessary steps to protect the personnel, the Plant, and the product in this order.

  • Develop and implement corrective actions in timely manner to prevent deviation recurrence.
  • Assure that manufacturing facilities and equipment are maintained in proper conditions. Provides assistance to operations in the control, management and disposal of household, biomedical and hazardous wastes to their respective area as applicable, ensuring compliance with federal and local regulations and policies following the plant, division and corporate procedures.
  • Coordinate activities with all support areas such as: Maintenance, Warehouse, Laboratories, Utilities, Technical Center, and Quality Assurance to maintain continuity and efficiency of the operations.
  • Provides and maintains the required manual and electronic documentation (SOP's, batch records, etc.) and information concerning the activity of the area including personnel, and production. Also, revise SOP's and PCR's and submit change requests for approval when required.
  • Participate actively and support of AbbVie's EHS programs, such as respiratory and hearing protection among others, ensuring compliance with applicable federal and local regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, Health Department, etc.)
  • Assure that proper and fair personnel performance evaluations are done and develop individual developmental plans when situations require people behavior improvements.
  • Assure people are properly trained and evaluated in the operations' functions.
  • Promote a healthy working environment and assures adequate safety procedures are established. Determine, in conjunction with the Safety Representative, the necessary personnel protection equipment needed in the operation to avoid personnel injuries or hazardous exposures.


Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or Science, major in Chemistry, Biology and/or Biotechnology .

Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in the health care industry.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing related area in a health care industry.
  • Previous experience with Delta V and MES, preferable.
  • Computer knowledge (Power Point, Excel and Word)
  • Solid knowledge of technical report writing.
  • Demonstrated administrative skills.
  • Conflict management ability/skills.
  • People skills at all levels
  • Able to work extended shifts and weekends as needed.
