Through a strategic collaboration, AbbVie and Calico (an Alphabet company) have together pledged $2.5Bn with the goal of using advanced technologies to understand aging-related biology, which will in-turn produce novel, first-in-class medicines for aging-related diseases including neurodegenerative and neoplastic diseases.

One such program and first to emerge from the collaboration is focused in the Neuroscience area, with potential use in, an ultra-rare and devastating disease, and another orphan disease with significant patient and caregiver impact. Neuroscience is an emerging therapeutic area of focus for AbbVie with dedicated Research and Development in Alzheimer's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. Other specialty focused disease areas are also being assessed for scientific and clinical value proposition for the future in Therapeutic areas like Oncology and Specialty Medicines.

Together, AbbVie and Calico have dedicated Discovery scientists in 4 locations: San Francisco Bay Area, CA, Lake County, IL, Cambridge, MA, and Ludwigshafen, Germany. The goal of our joint Discovery and Development work is to bring together the best of academic and biopharmaceutical research to establish a deep understanding of aging (including neurodegeneration) biology to identify the best targets and translational tools that improve probability of success. In addition, AbbVie has several exciting Neuroscience, Oncology and Specialty medicine assets already in Phase 1-3 clinical development and is committed to further broadening our growing portfolio with external assets and collaborations.

Key Responsibilities Includes:
  • Develops the commercial strategies for AbbVie-Calico lead assets in Neuroscience space, and additional novel, scientific targets progressing through the AbbVie-Calico portfolio for diseases in other therapeutic areas with significant unmet need.
  • Leads analysis of the market, identifies key segment value drivers, growth opportunities, target product profiles, product positioning & revenue potential
  • Leads and collaborates with Calico and AbbVie Asset Strategy Team (AST) in driving strategic alignment. around asset brand/commercial strategy
  • Drives development of the Early Brand Planning for orphan indications; crystalizing commercial and strategic insights by synthesizing product, brand, customer, consumer/patient, and competitive information into the development of Early Brand Plans
  • Initiates geostrategy and indication prioritization for each asset in partnership with development teams and areas / affiliates
  • Develops scientific platform with AST and drives data generation with clinical teams to satisfy global and area requirements for target product label and target product claims
  • Champions asset strategies and Early Brand Plans through the effective collaboration with Calico partner and AbbVie internal leadership team
  • Builds strong relationships with additional internal and external partners, leverages expertise to strengthen the asset value proposition
  • Builds strong relationships with other GCD GCLs in the Oncology and Specialty Medicine TAs to support commercial evaluation of other lead candidates coming from the collaboration.
  • Leads internal processes accurately reflecting asset opportunity and required support (Long Range Plan-LRP, Portfolio, Annual Plan); as required by the AbbVie-Calico collaboration framework
  • Is the commercial voice on current ASTs and leads the Brand Strategy Team (BST) with organizational leadership.
  • Supports the prioritization and selection of indications for emerging Calico programs. Provides commercial assessments for programs that may have multiple potential indications across therapeutic areas.


  • Pharma, biotech, or consultant firm experience is required
  • 10+ years of experience with successful track record in pharma marketing
  • Previous Commercial Development, Pipeline Management, Marketing and/or Consulting roles required
  • Advanced degree (MBA, Ph.D. or M.D.) is preferred
  • Experience in Neuroscience and orphan diseases, or a background across multiple disease areas is a plus
  • Experience in US Commercial and/or GMCO-type role is a plus
  • Experience working with external partners is preferred
  • Strong analytical and strategic marketing skills as well as scientific understanding
  • Strong financial acumen with a good understanding of P&L drivers and the ability to develop appropriate SG&A investment and top-line sales forecasts that generate long-term value.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills across a variety of organization levels and disciplines, including senior executives
  • Experience with matrix-based teams and project management
  • Excellent command of MS Excel and MS PowerPoint
  • Self-starter, strong collaborator who proactively drives projects toward successful completion
