The Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for genetics and genomics that supports both Discovery and Development. The GRC goal is to develop world class genetics and genomics research focused on finding the right targets and helping AbbVie scientists better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials across all therapeutic areas. Within the GRC, we have six departments: Bioinformatics, Functional Genomics, Genome Biology, Genomic Technologies, Human Genetics, and Genomic Medicine.

We are looking for a highly qualified individual in our Genomic Medicine group to lead GRC Ophthalmology efforts for identifying new targets using genetic and genomic data, characterizing disease mechanisms and supporting clinical pharmacogenetic efforts in Ophthalmology. This leader will bridge between Genomic Medicine and Human Genetics and will also closely collaborate with members of Clinical Development, Precision Medicine and Discovery to identify and characterize genetic, genomic or epigenetic factors that may affect disease etiology, disease progression or response to clinical trial therapies. We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified scientist with extensive experience in Ophthalmology, based in North Chicago, IL reporting to the Senior Director of Genomic Medicine. The level is commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with members of the Human Genetic team for new target discovery by mining human genetic databases in order to identify and characterize genetic variants associated with diseases of the eye and related disorders
  • Collaborate with colleagues in early Discovery to back-translate clinical findings for new target identification or characterization
  • Collaborate with Discovery in order to develop relevant models of eye disorders
  • Investigate emerging evidence on the role of COVID-19 and conjunctivitis and other eye disorders
  • Provide expertise and coordinate the pharmacogenetic activities for Clinical Ophthalmology
  • Review clinical protocols in Ophthalmology for the relevant pharmacogenetic sections
  • Represent the GRC on external collaborations and consortia involving genetic and genomic databases related to eye disorders

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Position will be hired based on level of experience.

  • PhD or equivalent degree with typically 8-10+ years of experience.
  • Strong background in Ophthalmology and genetics, and extensive experience in applying genomic technologies to identify and characterize underlying genomic mechanisms for diseases of the eye. The Candidate should have demonstrated ability to design and lead genetic and genomic studies delivering novel findings and medically relevant gene discoveries.
Additional desired skills include:
  • Experience with multidisciplinary teams on both the basic research and clinical questions
  • Deep knowledge of translating genomic data into clinically relevant results
  • Experience with large-scale research projects involving next generation DNA sequencing data (e.g. whole exome and whole genome) in conjunction with results from informatics and wide array of molecular biology strategies
  • Strong publication record in Ophthalmology and related fields
  • Experience or strong knowledge of pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics
  • Strong communication skills in a collaborative environment
