THE ROLE

AbbVie seeks a reputation-minded communications leader with strong business acumen to drive brand-aligned and insights-based work on behalf of the U.S. Immunology franchise.

The Director of U.S. Public Affairs, Immunology, leads the development and execution of creative and strategic external communications programs that advances the business objectives of AbbVie's U.S. Immunology franchise. The Director leads a team of therapeutic area communicators who promote and protect the positions of AbbVie's medicines across the three core areas of rheumatology, dermatology and gastroenterology. This position is responsible for leading communications for the largest pharmaceutical brand in history - HUMIRA - in addition to AbbVie's newest immunology medicines, SKYRIZI and RINVOQ.

The Director closely collaborates with functions across the organization, including AbbVie Corporate Communications, Research and Development Communications, and Global Public Affairs colleagues to identify and maximize opportunities to tell AbbVie's innovation and growth story.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represents Public Affairs as an informed, confident and forward-looking member of the Immunology Extended Leadership team comprised of senior cross-functional executives
  • Develops and communicates well-researched perspectives to counsel senior executives on business decisions to ensure a balance of promoting and protecting our immunology franchise and corporate reputation
  • Manages and inspires a team of rheumatology, dermatology and gastroenterology communication leads in the development and execution of strategic, high-impact public affairs programs with emphasis on competitive differentiation, KPIs and the external environment
  • Advocates for Public Affairs resources by demonstrating the value and unique capabilities the role brings to cross-functional brand teams
  • Demonstrates strong understanding of U.S. media environment and has media relations experience and skills to ensure effective engagement with reporters
  • Manages issues that affect the business overall by proactively anticipating and mitigating reputational risk to AbbVie and immunology brands, and works with public affairs head to influence business decision making on key business issues
  • Holds agency partners accountable for top performance and driving strong KPI-based results while also ensuring effective use of AbbVie resources
  • Identifies opportunities for individual team members to develop in their careers to ensure high-performing contributions to the U.S. Public Affairs organization
  • Leads and inspires U.S. Public Affairs Immunology team to embrace the broader organizational vision of "Present. Forward" through test and learn mindset
  • Consistently shares best practices and offers new ideas and thinking to raise the bar for U.S. Public Affairs team


Qualifications

THE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion. Curiosity. Authenticity.
  • Approximately 12 years of relevant experience and proven track record of success in developing and executing external communications programs that resonate with target stakeholders.
  • Experience in the healthcare, biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry. Strong business acumen with the ability to anticipate company and team needs, including strong understanding of U.S. healthcare system functioning and intricacies.
  • Leadership behaviors must be clear and courageous and demonstrate ability to manage difficult conversations though direct and constructive dialogue
  • Learns fast, asks thoughtful questions and can change course quickly when necessary; raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo; creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
