Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated technical leader with molecular and cell culture experience to work on innovative T cell therapy for cancer treatment. The Principal Process Scientist - Allogenic Process Development will provide process engineering and development technical leadership for new unit operation and process development, technology transfer and GMP manufacturing for Kite's engineered allogeneic T cell therapy products. Additionally, the Principal Process Scientist will lead and execute technical studies and activities to advance state of the art T-cell engineering, be accountable for preparing process development reports and assist with generating manufacturing production procedures and protocols. Known internally as a Principal Process Engineer, s/he will provide technical assessment and approval for engineering and process changes as well as documentation pertaining to process development to meet regulatory requirements.Further, the Principal Process Scientist will work with the Process Development team to design, develop and scale-up new unit operations focused on gene editing approaches to T-cell engineering with their application within cell therapy processes, with the application of emerging technologies and equipment to this new area. The Incumbent will have significant knowledge and hands on expertise in the technologies associated with gene editing, such as CRISPR/Cas9, TALEN or ZFN, together with developmental use of electroporation equipment and associated technologies, ideally in a development setting. S/he will interact cross-functionally to support process development of Kite's T cell products, as well as lead technical investigations as necessary.

Responsibilities of the Principal Process Scientist include:
  • Lead and execute technical projects to develop, characterize and improve the manufacturing process
  • Use statistical methods to perform process analysis
  • Supervise and guide team members, including matrixed team members
  • Planning, scheduling, and project management of technical projects and cross-functional teams
  • Lead and execute laboratory studies to support process design and development, characterization and process improvements
  • Perform hands on work in a cell culture lab
  • Author development plans, reports and documentation used to support regulatory submissions and process changes
  • Design and execute process development studies to develop a thorough understanding of operating and performance parameters
  • Act as technical expert to train and supervise technical personnel


Requirements:

Ph.D. degree in cellular biology, virology, immunology or a closely related field with 8+ years of direct experience with the use of genome editing technologies, electroporation and associated molecular techniques. Prior experience includes significant -cell biology work with an emphasis on immune cells / T-cells, together with deep hands-on expertise with aseptic tissue culture of cell lines and/or primary cells. Should the candidate not have a PhD degree, job requirements dictate either an MSc degree with 10+ years of the aforementioned experience OR a BS degree with 12+ years of the aforementioned experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cell therapy, T-cell product generation, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) based or TCR-engineered T-cells along with an understanding of T-cell and immune system biology
  • Ability to mentor and train more junior staff as a peer as well as a manager; together with the ability to work well within a matrix team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to critically design and execute experiments to support process development, characterization and process improvements
  • Knowledge of statistical design of experiments (DOE)
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are critical in this collaborative work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to function efficiently and independently in a fast-paced work environment and adjust workload based upon changing priorities
