AveXis is advancing cutting-edge science, starting with our proprietary gene therapy for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). AveXis, a Novartis company, is dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product is a proprietary gene therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric patients with SMA. In addition to developing a treatment for SMA, AveXis also plans to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

In order for patients to fully benefit from these transformative therapies, a series of critical issues must be addressed, ranging from accelerating diagnosis of genetic diseases, to forging innovative payment models that expand access. In bringing the first systemic life-saving gene therapy to patients, AveXis is poised to play a leading role in partnering with governments, patient advocacy groups, think tanks, and other critical stakeholders to create an environment that allows more patients to benefit from more gene therapies.

The Director, Global Advocacy Operations and Regional Launch Excellence will be responsible for effective implementation of the Patient Advocacy & Government Affairs Engagement program across AveXis. The role will focus on multiple aspects of effectiveness of the Global Patient Advocacy function by leading brand and launch planning at the global level, providing strategic support for Latin America/Canada and Asia Pacific regions, developing and maintaining a Center of Excellence for sharing best practices, overseeing effective strategy and communication initiatives, budget management, project management etc. across the organization.

This position will serve on the Global Patient Advocacy and Government Affairs Leadership Team.

Responsibilities
  • Support the development and drive the execution of AveXis Global Advocacy best-in-class vision.
  • Develop and drive global special projects (New Born Screening, brand planning, etc.) by building project plans, timelines to track program activities, deliverables, develop contingency plans and risk mitigation.
  • Provide global strategic and tactical support for launch readiness planning, tactical plans and execution and capacity building in priority countries.
  • Provide direct support for our Latin America/Canada and Asia Pacific regions and serve as point of contact for launch planning, early patient engagement coordination, newborn screening initiatives and pilots and other special projects.
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedure modules, launch playbooks and best practices to support regional and functional evolution - maintaining a functional Center of Excellence.
  • Provide project management, inspire and track cross-functional collaboration, and provide regular progress updates to all global teams including the Global Leadership Forum, Global Brand Team, Global Product Teams, etc.
  • Responsible for Global Advocacy team financial planning, budget management, timely execution and payment, resolving delays or conflicts.
  • Manage global sponsorships, grants, and vendor engagement (in coordination with US and regional operations for budget planning).
  • Distill key outcomes from key internal or external meetings and communicate to the broader team to ensure the entire team remains updated and aligned.
  • Develop and lead the training strategy and plan for AveXis, including representing AveXis at Novartis Global Patient Advocacy meetings/forums and maintaining strong partnerships with other Novartis divisions, teams and functions to identify challenges and trends.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional teams that manage global, cross-divisional projects related to patient advocacy, global government affairs and engagement.
  • Develop and oversee advocacy and government affairs communication strategy and issues crisis management, in coordination with Corporate Communications, for PA & PA associates in region and countries.
  • Oversee and be accountable for all Global interactions with cross-Divisional projects related to Training and Communications in patient engagement and advocacy.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree and Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • 8 years of pharmaceutical industry experience with responsibility for patient advocacy, global marketing or a related field.
  • Strong business acumen, experience working globally, supporting market-shaping initiatives, with a working knowledge of when to reach out to which cross-functional partners.
  • Strong project management skills; independently drives projects forward, establishes budget and timeline, keeps track of tasks, prepares for meetings, follows up in a timely fashion, demonstrates appropriate accountability.
  • Expert understanding of global industry compliance requirements, and the ability to directly make and manage funding decisions in alignment with regional and country compliance and priorities.
  • Effective negotiation skills; ability to solve conflicts or challenges in a timely manner, demonstrating sound judgement with minimal supervision.
  • High standards of excellence and attention to detail. Proven ability to function with little support and a hard-working, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to prioritize self and others on the most critical activities to drive impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully drive and collaborate on cross-functional strategic initiatives.
