Position Summary:

The Director, Genetic Epidemiology, is a leadership position within the Research and Development group. The Director will set strategies for the incorporation of genetic information, analyses, and clinical genomics in pre-clinical and clinical programs. He/she will apply state-of-the art genetics tools and knowledge to determine prevalence and incidence of rare diseases, and geographical location of patient populations to drive decision-making across multiple functions within the company. This position will also contribute to the understanding of genetic causes of disease including how mutations affect gene function, disease phenotypes, and clinically relevant biomarkers.

Essential Functions:

  • Set strategy for the incorporation of genetic/clinical genomic information into on-going and future drug discovery and development programs.
  • Responsible for determining prevalence and incidence of rare diseases using available information (including natural history studies, literature, sequence databases/gnomAD, ClinVar, GWAS, etc.) for pipeline programs and new disease diligence efforts.
  • Notify Clinical, Business Development and Commercial organizations on geographic distribution of patient populations to aid clinical trial design and product distribution.
  • Partner with academic, industry consortia and advocacy organizations to leverage patient registries, natural history studies, real-world evidence, electronic health records, etc.to understand the genetics of rare disease and patient populations.
  • Provide guidance on potential Business Development opportunities, participate in ad hoc Due Diligence activities and provide expertise from a genetic understanding of rare diseases.
  • Develop strategies to improve Retrophin understanding of genetic disease diagnosis and patient identification.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of genetics databases including external scientific literature and apply information to internal projects.
  • Effectively collaborate across functions within Research, Clinical, Medical Affairs, Patient Advocacy, Business Development and Commercial.
  • Manage multiple, at times conflicting priorities and proactively seek viable solutions to resolve issues.
  • Represent Research and Non-Clinical Development as a Subject Matter Expert and thought leader.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant Key Opinion Leaders and academic researchers.


Qualifications:

  • PhD in genetics or genetic epidemiology or a Master of Public Health (MPH). An equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience can be considered.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in the academic, pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Experience in rare diseases is a plus.
  • Broad understanding of epidemiological methods, genetics principles, large sequence databases, statistical analysis and principles of real-world evidence.
  • Experience building and managing collaborations with scientists, consultants, pharmaceutical partners and other outside organizations.
  • Well organized with the ability to multitask, prioritize and manage shifting responsibilities in a dynamic, cross-functional teamwork environment.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and manage complexity.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to adapt to modification and changes to project plans, demonstrating flexibility to implement new strategies and tactics to accommodate these changes.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% domestic and internationally.
