The National Field Director (NFD), Regional Accounts, is a field-based scientific leader reporting to the Value & Access (V&A) Vice President (VP) with oversight of all US Medical Affairs activity with Healthcare Access Decision Makers (HCDMs) at the Regional account level. The NFD will lead the Regional Field leaders (e.g., Regional Field Director) to ensure scientific Payer Medical Objectives and Strategies across all AbbVie therapies are executed effectively and compliantly among their respective field team, Medical Outcomes Science Liaisons (MOSLs). The NFD combines management capability with a technical and scientific background and expertise in managed care, outcomes research, health economics, and healthcare landscape and policy to work alongside appropriate cross-functional partners to develop and implement Regional account channel strategy. The NFD will also collaborate, appropriately influence and lead without direct authority in a matrixed environment as necessary to deliver relevant training, resources and tools to advance the MOSL team capability to evolve medical engagement among the changing HCDM Customer.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead Regional Field Director team to address key customer and organizational challenges. Lead and strategically develop field management team to further advance their respective teams' scientific and business capabilities, enhance professional development and foster positive team culture. Ensure Regional MOSL personnel are sufficiently trained and equipped to be able to fully engage and influence key HCDMs across various payer organizations to AbbVie interests.
  • Collaborate with appropriate Medical personnel across entire AbbVie portfolio to shape AbbVie payer medical strategy and tactics to optimize market access for new and in-line products or indications with Regional HCDM accounts and across various channels. Along with NFD counterparts, accountability for elevated and appropriate field execution of AbbVie payer medical tactics and scientific business strategies.
  • Appropriately partner with cross-functional field leaders, including but not limited to Market Access General Manager/Sales Director, Medical Science Liaison National Director, Health Economics and Outcomes Research Directors, to cultivate excelled in-field team effectiveness in order to accomplish aligned business goals. In working with internal leadership partners, leverage and integrate scientific knowledge, managed care/business acumen and healthcare landscape/policy awareness to anticipate and mitigate medically-related payer challenges impacting the MOSL team.
  • Oversees Regional Field metrics and reporting, leveraging analytics to drive efficiency and innovation as well as maintain compliance related to MOSL initiatives and activities.
  • In collaboration with NFD - National Accounts with shared accountability across all HCDM accounts, aligns with Medical Payer Strategy team in order to allocate field resources and training to deliver results on business/clinical strategies, while protecting AbbVie from risk.
  • Maintain regulatory and compliance expertise to represent the Regional MOSLs on applicable internal and external regulatory practices. Identify opportunities and seek compliant solutions to evolve In Field Ways of Working based on the changing HCDM Customer and their medical needs. Accountable for compliance within designated team.
  • Assist V&A VP with on-going special projects and strategic thinking for advancement of Regional MOSL Field team initiatives. Represent V&A Regional Account or Payer Channel field voice in relevant internal meetings, such as therapeutic area GMATs, IBTs, etc., and/or workstreams as delegated by the V&A VP.
  • Represent and advocate Regional MOSL field needs with internal cross functional partners, such as Legal, Compliance, Operations, Regulatory, etc., as well as during Senior AbbVie management meetings.
  • Present, facilitate and manage with executive competency to both internal and external Senior leadership/customers to appropriately influence results.
  • Ensures allocation and integration of MOSL resources in support of overarching strategy and V&A Leadership direction. Oversees Performance Management process, Growth Plan, and Professional Development as well as Succession Planning for designated MOSL team. Accountable for budget related to their area and projects as defined.

Qualifications
  • Advanced degree required, preferably M.D., D.O., Pharm.D. or Ph.D.
  • The position requires eight (8) to ten (10) years of experience in a Managed Care/PBM, VA/DoD, CMS, State Medicaid, health care consulting, pharmaceutical industry or related environment. Account management experience in a commercial or clinical setting is preferred. In additional to clinical and therapeutic expertise, a superior understanding of the busines of healthcare policy and managed markets from the perspective of clinical, regulatory, commercial and policy issues affecting the pharmaceutical and health insurance environments preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct people management experience required, preferably with pharma management and corporate experience and leading a field medical team.
  • Advanced scientific and business acumen - Includes sophisticated understanding of the healthcare landscape.
  • Mastery communication skills (verbal, written) with superior active listening skills.
  • Self-motivated and solution oriented
  • Advanced ability to network and collaborate effectively across multiple levels within an organization
  • Advanced technical expertise and business analysis skills
  • Mastery in innovative problem-solving, critical- and strategic thinking skills
  • Mastery ability to manage and to lead multiple projects and timelines supported by superior organizational and project management skills.
