Executive Director, Clinical Biomarkers and Diagnostics

The use of Biomarkers and in-vitro diagnostics is central to understanding how our therapeutics work and identifying patients that benefit the most from these therapies. Accordingly, the Clinical Biomarkers and Diagnostics organization has a critical role in advancing our drug development programs and is responsible for the delivery of clinical biomarker and in-vitro diagnostic development across our pipeline.

The Head of Clinical Biomarkers and Diagnostics leads this organization, reporting directly to the Head of Translational Medicine. In this role, there is significant partnership with both Amgen's Research and Clinical Development Organizations. Key responsibilities include scientific and strategic oversight of biomarker and in-vitro diagnostic development. The biomarker activities are focused on understanding the mechanism of action for our therapeutics, as well as the efficacy, safety, and patient selection strategy that can be applied to our clinical programs. These insights go on to inform the in vitro diagnostic strategy. This role is also responsible for helping represent Amgen during interactions with regulatory agencies and the scientific community. Candidates for this role should have:
  • History of successfully providing leadership across multiple disease areas and applying diverse biomarker data to clinical questions including response prediction, patient stratification, and marker qualification
  • ‪‪Broad understanding of 'omic'/profiling technologies including next generation sequencing applications
  • ‪Track record of scientific publications and/or presentations
  • An established professional network that enables communication with government agencies, national advisory boards, and members of the scientific community


Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD and/or MD and 6 years of experience in Biomarker and/or Diagnostic Development OR
  • Master's degree and 10 years of experience in Biomarker and/or Diagnostic Development OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 12 years of experience in Biomarker and/or Diagnostic Development AND
  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources


Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD and/or MD and 10 years of experience in Biomarker and/or Diagnostic Development
  • Experience working in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Deep understanding of biomarker-related research, clinical application of biomarkers, and the regulatory requirements for biomarker and in-vitro diagnostic approval
  • Demonstrated success in organizational leadership, technical proficiency and scientific creativity
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven success in building and leading high-performance organizations through talent development and recruitment
  • Demonstrated success working in a multidisciplinary team-based environment
  • Experience as a team player that demonstrates flexibility and is adaptable in a changing environment
  • Experience driving successful internal and external collaborations that address innovative approaches
