Associate Director, Environmental Health and Safety - Branchburg, NJ

*YOU ARE more than just a title, YOU ARE... The Associate Director, EH&S and you will drive and lead all safety initiatives for the Branchburg site aligning with corporate strategic direction and site strategy. You will be responsible for monitoring site processes, identifying, evaluating and controlling hazards inherent in the manufacturing process, including their research and development as well as maintaining full compliance with all federal, state, local and AbbVie EHS rules and regulations.


Excel as the site EH&S strategic leader. You will drive and lead the EHS department to align with site goals and to develop programs and continuous improvement efforts that support safely delivering output. You will provide business perspective, strategic and tactical direction to develop and implement EHS initiatives for the EHS Long range plan. You will ensure the facilities are in full compliance with federal, state, local and corporate Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) requirements, rules and regulations. You will conduct formal and informal audits of management systems & performance of operating units, etc.

Be the SME for EH&S requirements. You will establish policies and procedures based on requirements. You will create, promote, administer and review EHS related programs. You will ensure effective resolution of noncompliance events, environmental releases, work-related injuries and illnesses if/when they occur, including determination of systemic causes, and corrective and preventive actions. You will be responsible for the training of employees on EH&S related topics as required by federal, state, local and AbbVie rules and regulations.

Excel as the site EH&S people leader . You will manage contract and full-time EH&S staff supporting all EH&S initiatives and direction for management, professional, technical and support staff in area of responsibility. You will develop and manage staff through hiring, managing performance, developing talent and providing clear expectations.


  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or related field preferred.
  • 7 - 10 years' experience administering safety programs, preferably in a biotech, pharmaceutical or high-tech environment.
  • CSP or CIH preferred
  • A strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NJDEP laws & regulations including: Biosafety & Bloodborne Pathogens, Laboratory Safety, Hazard Communication, Hearing Conservation, Hazardous Energy (LOTO), Machine Guarding, Contractor Safety Management, Ergonomics, Hot Work, Electrical Safety, Confined Spaces, Powered Industrial Trucks.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED and HAZWOPER is a plus
  • Must be able to gown and enter laboratories, shipping/warehousing, clean room/aseptic production and process development areas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, people skills, and an ability to work under pressure within deadlines are required. Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong organization, recordkeeping, and presentation skills a must.
  • Must able to work seamlessly across business units and navigate complex situations
