Scientific Associate II - Drug Delivery and Biomaterials - Irvine, CA

AbbVie's R&D Organization is seeking a Scientific Associate to develop new biomaterials for use in next generation medical device and drug delivery formulations.


Be a trusted and expert scientific partner.
  • You will work in a R&D laboratory to develop new biomaterials for use in next generation medical device and drug delivery formulations.
  • You will assist scientists and engineers to execute experimental studies under supervision, including synthesis, fabrication, processing, characterization, and/or assembly of polymeric materials. Multiple characterization methods and analytical procedures will be utilized as needed. You may assist with experimental planning.
  • You will actively work effectively in a team environment. Frequent communication with colleagues within the group and in cross functional departments will be required. You may participate in team meetings to provide status updates or data/figures for presentations.
  • You will be highly engaged in lab productivity and efficiency. You will offer suggestions for improving general lab efficiency along with offering/implementing suggestion for improving experimental procedures, workflows, SOPs, and processes. You will maintain cleanliness and uphold high safety standards. You may assist with maintenance of laboratory equipment/instrumentation.
  • You will write, review and issue technical reports, technical memoranda and other documents for internal and external distribution. You will keep detailed and organized notebooks and documentation.


  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or other related fields
  • B.S. with 2 plus years laboratory experience or M.S. with some industrial experience in a chemistry or polymer lab is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of chemical principles/reactions, strong laboratory skills, presentation skills, and the ability to learn quickly and implement new learnings effectively.
  • Energetic attitude, highly motivated, and conscientious of fellow colleagues.
  • Hands-on experience in one or more of the following technical areas is desirable: polymer synthesis, cross-linking/chemical modification of biomaterials, hydrogels, biodegradable polymers, polymer processing, and chemical & physical characterization of polymers.
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively multi-task with minimal supervision under the guidance of scientists/engineers, and to interact with multiple cross-functional groups.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to generate and implement new protocols and procedures. Attention to detail and continuous suggestions for improving experimental methods and general lab efficiency/workflows
  • Must be willing to learn new skills and methods, operation of equipment and instrumentation, etc.
  • Must be computer literate and have a sound knowledge of MS Office software.
