Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join us as a Senior EH&S Specialist at our new state-of-the-art cell therapy commercial manufacturing facility in Frederick, Maryland.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develops, reviews and revises policies, procedures, practices, and training which support continual improvement of the site EH&S (Environmental Health & Safety) Management System (EH&SMS)
  • Assists with screening and communicating environmental and safety regulatory requirements relating to the development and manufacture of APIs
  • Serves as EH&S representative for key environmental and safety programs, prepares meeting agendas, addresses technical concerns, and ensures preparation and distribution of meeting minutes
  • Communicates cross-functionally: Routinely interfaces with R&D, materials management, and manufacturing site personnel to identify regulatory requirements at early stage of process development for site operations
  • Maintains records relating to environmental and safety management system initiatives and projects, records of regulatory filings and correspondence
  • Fields questions from consultants and laboratories relating to new substance registration programs. Monitors and measures performance in relation to contractual obligations and project deadlines
  • Gathers data for the purposes of regulatory reporting and for monitoring, measuring, and communicating environmental and safety performance; prepares report submissions
  • Participates in internal management system and monthly regulatory compliance audits, prepares reports, monitors and tracks the status of compliance projects
  • Develops and delivers training to departmental groups relating to management system conformance and regulatory compliance
  • Utilizes established systems and practices to determine and develop approaches to routine problems of moderate complexity, based on analysis of situation or data
  • Performs incident management activities, including injury management, investigations and associated record keeping. Identifies, implements and tracks corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Performs hazard assessments and other EH&S evaluations, including employee monitoring. Evaluates identified hazards and develops appropriate mitigation plans.
  • Performs or ensures waste management activities are completed and in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Support physical security programs


Knowledge & Skills
  • Possesses working knowledge and understanding of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Access, and standard MS Office tools
  • Knowledge of current international, national and provincial safety and environmental legislation
  • Knowledge of the sustainable business practices, and the ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System standard, and ISO 18001:2007


Basic Qualifications:
  • MS Degree and 3+ years' experience in health and safety, chemistry, life science or environmental science OR
  • BS Degree and 5+ years' experience in health and safety, chemistry, life science or environmental science OR
  • High School Degree and 9+ years' experience in health and safety, chemistry, life science or environmental science


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Work weekends and holidays.
  • Sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Change into Gilead gowns and work attire as required for aseptic area tasks.
  • Perform and qualify for Lock Out Tag Out operation, Arc Flash operations, Fall Protection operations, and Confined Space operations.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • Operate and qualify for respirator usage, distinguish all colors and shades, and use a ladder.
