AbbVie is seeking a creative and experienced leader of our Neuroscience Computational Biology team to use quantitative analyses and data integration from discovery sciences to the clinic for accelerating efforts to develop innovate therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases. The successful candidate will be responsible for bioinformatic strategy
to ensure success of the Neuroscience therapeutic area in relevant areas. To be successful, you will need deep and broad computational science expertise along with accomplished communication and influencing skills. You will be able to recruit, build, and manage a strong and creative team that delivers tangible and impactful results.
The successful candidate will be the leader of Neuroscience Computational Biology, which consists of three teams located at Neuroscience sites: Cambridge (MA), Ludwigshafen (Germany) and North Chicago (IL). The position is centered in Cambridge and the successful candidate will develop the vision and strategy to lead the cross-functional interface between our Neuroscience therapeutic area, the Genomic Research Center (GRC), and broader external collaborations as needed. AbbVie's Neuroscience R&D seeks novel therapeutic approaches that will have a remarkable impact on patients with neurodegenerative diseases. The focus areas are Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, but includes other adjacent disorders such as multiple sclerosis and stroke.
AbbVie's GRC is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, human genetics, genome biology, and genomic medicine and has access to various population cohorts (over 1 million genomes). The GRC works across all R&D, and multiple areas such as process sciences and corporate strategy. Additionally, AbbVie is expanding its data strategy portfolio to advance Precision Medicine. This position will report to the Global Head of Bioinformatics in the GRC, as part of a group of more than 60 computationally focused scientists and engineers.

- Set the global strategy for Neuroscience Computational Biology for target identification and biomarker research in close alignment with AbbVie ' s Neuroscience objectives. Work closely with other bioinformatic TA heads to maintain alignment of common vision across the bioinformatics organization.
- Identify and recruit key talent to shape innovative approaches to drive the Neuroscience portfolio forward and bridge across all R&D
- Identify and implement key collaborations with external partners, and evaluation of new opportunities and technologies
- Foster close communication and collaboration between Computational Biology and wet lab research within Neuroscience Discovery, Development and other key stakeholders and relevant organizations.
- Lead, motivate, inspire and develop diverse, cross-functional teams in a highly matrixed, multi-cultural global environment
- Maintain a 'one Computational Biology ' spirit within Neuroscience and participate in the global Computational Biology organization led by the GRC.
- This leader will grow their program in headcount and influence
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Doctoral degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, (Bio)Statistics, (Bio)Mathematics, Genetic Epidemiology or Biology/Medicines/ Genomics related disciplines with a strong focus on data analysis. An MD would be advantageous for helping to shape our Development Computational Biology programs.
- A minimum of 10-12 years' experience in Computational Biology in pharmaceutical or biotechnology research and drug development in Neuroscience. A minimum of 5-6 years in Alzheimer's and/or Parkinson's Disease research or other neurodegenerative diseases.
- Established ability to recruit and build high-performing teams.
- Excellent scientific and managerial track record. Experience in leading external collaborations.
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and working in a cross-functional international environment.
- Ability to travel up to 20%
