The Associate Director, Cell Therapy Discovery leads a group with the Cell Therapy Discovery Team, reporting to the Senior Director. The Associate Director oversees research projects and manages other group members to support development of a portfolio of Cell Therapy products in accordance with Precisions goals and in collaboration with external partners. The Associate Director, Cell Therapy position is lab and office-based and will share facilities and resources within the Cell Therapy Discovery team.

  • Direct research and development of a portfolio of cell therapy products from early stage preclinical work to IND-enabling studies
    • Coordinate with the Senior Director of Cell Therapy Discovery, Senior Leadership, Senior team members, external collaborators, and internal functional leaders to plan experiments that need to be carried out to achieve Precisions goals for developing T Cell Therapies
    • Coordinate with Research Assistants, Research Associates, and Scientists to plan and carry out experiments to achieve Precisions goals for developing T Cell Therapies
      • Planning, assigning, and directing work for group members in support of the Cell Therapy teams goals
      • Overseeing that the work is being corrected performed, analyzed, recorded, and reported
    • Report results to the Senior Director, CSO, and other senior personnel as required.
      • Share new data, file reports as needed
      • Assist in publishing or presenting data as needed
      • Provide data to support patent applications
  • Manage budgets and lab operations
  • Train, develop and manage direct reports, including setting clear responsibilities and goals, holding regular performance discussions and reviews and identifying training and development opportunities
  • Champion company initiatives and partner with other groups at the company to ensure cross-functional alignment
  • Staff Cell Therapy Team
      • Identify opportunities for creating positions to advance the Cell Therapy team objectives and timelines
      • Screen applicants and guide the interview process while serving as hiring manager
      • Onboard new laboratory personnel
      • Develop and ensure execution of training plans in basic and advanced laboratory techniques for new personnel
      • Represent Precision BioSciences and the Cell Therapy Discovery Group
    • Attend conferences and other meetings outside of Precision BioSciences, presenting data when appropriate
    • Attend meetings with collaborators and potential collaborators and actively participate in research collaborations
    • Present research findings, timelines and plans during regular and ad-hoc meetings
  • Assist in general operation of the Cell Culture facility
    • Coordinate with Operations and Facilities personnel to ensure:
      • Shared resources are utilized appropriately between teams
      • Consumables are ordered and stocked as needed
      • Cells and other reagents are available for experiments as needed

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.

  • Bachelors degree in cellular & molecular biology/immunology with 10+ years related academic or industry experience. Advanced degree (MS or PhD) strongly preferred.

  • Management experience consisting of managing a minimum of four concurrent direct reports for greater than three years; experience managing larger groups strongly preferred; experience with Matrix Management or hybrid-Matrix a plus
  • Experience with multiparameter flow cytometric analysis and accompanying data analysis software proficiency
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific journals; ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite

  • Knowledge of FDA regulatory processes related to cell therapies required with experience in IND-submission
  • Experience managing collaborations with external partners
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with cell culture and cell-based assays of lymphocyte function, including proliferation, cytotoxicity and cytokine release assays
  • Experience and knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including: PCR, restriction digestion & cloning, primer design, plasmid isolation and analysis, bacterial transformation and screening, extraction of genomic DNA, DNA sequencing and analysis and proficiency with accompanying data analysis software
  • Familiarity and experience with siRNA, shRNA, protein engineering and gene editing
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis

Travel Requirements
  • This position requires some travel (5-10%), primarily for scientific conferences, meetings with potential partners, training activities.

  • This position is located at the main headquarters located in Durham, NC and is required to physically be and work in the office, in order to be most effective, and at managers discretion.
