The IACUC/Compliance group along with the Comparative Medicine East (CME) department have primary responsibility for assuring that the Animal Care and Use Program meets the standards for continued accreditation by AAALAC International (AAALACi) and meets the regulations required for compliance with the Cambridge Commissioner of Laboratory Animal Research. The Vivarium Compliance Technician works closely with the Compliance/IACUC Coordinator to assure the IACUC that animal use is being conducted in compliance with the approved IACUC protocols and policies. Additionally, the Vivarium Compliance Technician serves as the training coordinator for the program.

Training Coordinator Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the training and orientations of researchers, vivarium staff, interns and contractors.
  • Maintain all training records for individuals who work with animals and/or who have access to the vivarium.
  • Coordinate with the QA Training group to assign appropriate computer-based training and/or on the job (OJT) training within ISO train.
  • Observe/train/sign off employees in husbandry duties, injections, non- survival blood collection methods, euthanasia methods, ID such as ear punching, ear tagging, and ink marking, survival blood collection methods such as tail vein and retro orbital, formulation preparation, anesthesia of rodents, tissue harvest collection/necropsy, surgical procedures and other procedures as needed.
  • Update/develop training modules, quizzes and SOPs as needed and/or every 3 years for IACUC review.

Post Approval Monitoring & Compliance Support Responsibilities:
  • Perform CME facility assessment walk-throughs on a regular basis.
  • Perform/coordinate Post Approval Monitoring (PAM) oversight for the ABC/CRC vivarium by observing techniques and procedures of current study work and report findings to the IACUC.
  • Complete PAMs for all protocols at least once prior to the triennial review or as needed and requested by the IACUC.
  • Attend IACUC meetings and present all PAM activity to the committee.
  • Serve as the Principal Investigator of the ABC/CRC IACUC Training and Holding protocols. Maintaining these protocols by submitting amendments as needed, completing IACUC annual reviews and submitting 3-year renewal to the IACUC.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years' experience working with laboratory animals.
  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory animal handling, research techniques, and knowledge of a variety of animal models of disease.
  • Understands and acts on detailed instructions.
  • Must be able to work cross functionally with other departments and groups.
  • Must have good basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Maintains concise, accurate and comprehensive written records. Good oral and written communication skills
  • Must be adaptable and flexible to meet demands of ever-changing work environment.
  • Must have good organizational skills and keen observation skills.
  • Possess the initiative to take action and make process improvements and changes through innovative ideas.

This position is located in Worcester, MA with one day required onsite at our Cambridge, MA location.
