Job Description
Kite, a Gilead Company, is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel cancer immunotherapy products designed to harness the power of a patient's own immune system to selectively target and kill cancer cells. Our core technology involves the genetic engineering of T cells, or white blood cells, to express either chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) or T cell receptors (TCRs) for the treatment of advanced solid and hematological malignancies.
The Intellectual Property (IP) Group at Kite is seeking a patent attorney with experience in the biotechnology and life science industry who thrives in a rapidly growing, high-volume, fast-paced, high-performing and collaborative corporate environment to join its team.
Responsibilities will include:
Drafting and prosecution global patent portfolio in immunology and cell therapy areas; conducting freedom to operate and patentability assessment; reviewing and negotiating the IP provisions in agreements; providing IP support to a broad range of groups including Manufacturing, Research and Development, Alliance Management and Corporate Development; working collaboratively with the legal department and cross-functional groups at Gilead's headquarters in Foster City, CA and at affiliates and subsidiaries around the globe.
Specific Responsibilities and Skills
Draft and prosecute patent applications (US and foreign patent offices).
Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of assigned projects.
Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate reviews.
Counsel research and colleagues in regards of patent portfolio and strategy.
Review and assist in the drafting of nondisclosure, research, license and other agreements involving the use, transfer, or ownership of intellectual property.
Review proposed publications in regards of potential invention disclosure.
Provide support for in-licensing and acquisitions.
Qualifications
A Juris Doctorate and admission before a State bar or fully qualified legal credentials in geography of operations.
Minimum 5 years of industry and/or law firm experience.
Fully admitted to practice applicable laws in the country or jurisdictions of responsibility.
Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Must have strong client service orientation.
Experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries preferred.
Advanced degree in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Life Science or related sciences preferred.
