Field Medical Director Job Description

This position will manage and continue to develop a regional field-based Medical Science Liaison team based in the U.S. to successfully support Ovid Medical Science[ZC1] strategies, operations, tasks and programs necessary for sustaining and supporting development of compounds in the Ovid pipeline pipeline.

Job Responsibilities
  • Builds an MSL team at and develops a thought leaders (TL) strategy at Ovid
  • Provides day-to-day management of the individual field-based MSLs on the West regional team
  • Performs field management visits with individual MSLs to support territory development and promptly address field challenges or issues; the frequency of these meetings will be dependent on operational loads for specific projects, but the minimum number envisaged is 4/year
  • Ensures contributions towards and support for Ovid Medical Science Strategic Goals for products, pipeline and overall department
  • Ensures each MSL develops and executes a regional field medical plan aligned and consistent with the Ovid Medical science organization Strategic Medical Plans
  • Ensure MSL compliance and adherence to Ovid SOPs and Ovid Field Medical operating guidelines
  • Ensures teamwork, trust and respect, builds confidence and esprit-de-corps within the MSL organization
  • Maintains and updates the MSL team metrics program to fully reflect the alignment of team activities in supporting key Ovid Medical strategies and tactics
  • Oversees and critically manages the external expert engagement program with home-office leadership and provides key insights from field medical to improve engagement and adjust the engagement tactical plan over time
  • Continues to broaden the organizational impact and scope of the Medical Science Liaison function at Ovid under the direction of Senior Medical Director or VP, Medical Science (Medical Affairs).
  • Is responsible for identifying and hiring MSLs for open territories and establishes a medical coverage plan for any open territories
  • In coordination with other internal stakeholders is responsible for overseeing the training of the MSL team to ensure deep knowledge of relevant data in order for the MSLs to successfully serve as the field scientific experts representing Ovid and the corporation at large
  • Identifies overall staff development needs, including identifying strengths/areas for improvement of individual MSL team members and fosters professional development plans to recognize and maximize those strengths and effectively manage areas for further development
  • Leads and oversees the regional MSL team's activities to identify, establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key investigators, external experts and strategic institutions for the effective use of company products and/or the advancement of investigational agents within Incyte's pipeline
  • Contributes in the provision of medical & scientific education and supports scientific exchange with healthcare professionals, formulary and P&T committees, medical directors and other product coverage/ reimbursement decisional stakeholders in insurance companies and other payer groups (including Government), as well as other key interested parties
  • Leads and oversees the identification of medical community training and educational needs (including gaps in CME/CNE across various US regions, as well as at the national level)
  • Substantively collaborates with the appropriate Ovid departments to ensure that education and training needs are addressed
  • Increases company visibility with current and future external leaders
  • Identifies clinical research opportunities that are consistent with company objectives and oversees relevant MSL team activities supporting such opportunities
  • Enhances professional interaction between Ovid and industry, academic, institutional, consortia, and cooperative group leaders
  • Provides oversight to the regional MSL team, especially with regard to key contacts with principal and clinical site investigators for the initiation and timely progression of investigator-initiated / -initiated trials (IITs)
  • Maintains clinical and scientific expertise through self-education, including attendance at relevant conferences, scientific workshops and review of key publications

Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced degree (M.D., Ph.D. or Pharm.D.) is required, along with prior experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical or healthcare education environment
  • 7-10 years in Medical Affairs and minimum of 5 years in field-based medical roles
  • People management experience necessary, MSL team management experience is highly desirable/ strongly preferred
  • CNS experience is required, preferably in rare diseases
  • Knowledge of PhaRMA, clinical research processes, FDA regulations and OIG guidelines is required
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills are a must
  • The ability to network and partner with important external customers, including thought leaders, academic institutions, large group practices, medical directors and pharmacy directors, cooperative group leaders, and other decisional stakeholders is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with internal customer groups for strategic planning, customer planning and project execution including Medical Affairs Leadership, R&D and Commercial Team members
  • Ability to travel is a prerequisite; approx. 50% travel time commitment
