Job Summary

The Director, Scientific & Technical Assessment will coordinate technical due diligence, evaluate and assess new opportunities and participate in updates to the senior management, key internal stakeholders and the executive management team. The Director, Scientific & Technical Assessment will also provide scientific and technical expertise to support Business Unit development programs and projects as requested on an ongoing basis. The candidate should have a strong technical background, experience working in and/or leading product development programs within the biotech/pharmaceutical industry and a deep understanding of the drug discovery product development cycle for new therapies (e.g. vaccines, biologics, small molecules, etc.) and/or medical devices.

Essential Functions
  • Manage and coordinate technical due diligence activities associated with merger and new product acquisition (M&A) activities including data-room management and collaboration with functional area subject matter experts (preclinical, non-clinical, manufacturing, clinical, quality and regulatory) and external consultants.
  • Assist scientific and data driven analyses; prepare written, oral summaries and reports of uncovered risks related to new products or whole company acquisitions.
  • Provide scientific consultation and support to corporate and Business Unit customers.
  • Remain up to date on cutting edge technology developments by engaging with external key opinion leaders and/or subject matter experts, internal stakeholders, and continuous exploration of published literature.
  • Provide real-time insights on new candidate products of potential interest to Emergent.
  • Coordinate, manage and lead scientific and technical assessment processes by gathering, reviewing and analyzing applicable data and information for new Business Unit opportunities.
  • Present scientific data and technical assessment to executive management team and board of directors.
  • Support financial modeling valuations and assumptions with scientific and technical input for potential new Corporate Development opportunities.
  • Provide technical input to Commercial Assessments team for generation of target product profiles to be used in market landscape analyses.
  • Provide technical insights to legal team regarding definitive agreement warranties and representations for transactions in support of M&A or in-licensing deals.
  • Assist Business Units and Corporate Strategy team with evaluation of disruptive innovation opportunities and collaborations with leading academic research institutions.
  • Supports External Development Grants and Contracts team by providing technical assessments in support of new potential funding opportunities from the U.S. Government.
  • Coordinate delivery of technical due diligence training to subject matter experts representing functional areas in licensing and M&A due diligence evaluations.
  • Attend scientific, technical and business conferences relevant to Corporate Development and Business Units strategic interests.
  • Manage company-wide e-Library and publications database on behalf of all employees.
  • Support R&D portfolio management processes across the Business Units and at a corporate level.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience leading technical due diligence
  • Experience with project management (e.g. PMP certification) and leading cross-functional teams a strong preference.
  • Cross-functional collaboration skills - working with colleagues across multiple functions including Preclinical, Non-clinical, Clinical, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, Legal and Program Management areas.
  • Prior vaccines or biologics research and development experience in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience with development of medical devices would be considered a plus.

Education, Experience & Skills
  • MS/PhD/PharmD/MD in the life-sciences such as; biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, immunology, chemistry with an emphasis on public health threats and emerging infectious diseases.
  • Solid scientific training and experience (e.g. drug development) in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry.
  • MBA with a strong scientific foundation other relevant business experience are encouraged to apply (e.g. PhD/MBA, MBA w/drug discovery experience).
