Purpose:

The Sr. Director, Data Science Strategy and Operations, is a leader accountable for ensuring optimized data operations and delivery of high-quality data for AbbVie's entire clinical trial portfolio. To this end, the Sr. Director drives functional strategy in coordination with overall pharmaceutical development clinical trials operations strategy and oversees data science execution. In addition, the Sr. Director is responsible for ownership and architecture of best-in-class operational design and process development/evolution/innovation. The Sr. Director works with Data Science technology teams to optimally design and deploy technology including cutting-edge automation in support of designed processes. The Sr. Director is a highly empowered leader, a decision-maker and influencer across the enterprise, and a contributor to the overall pharmaceutical development clinical program and trial planning, design, and execution strategy.

Responsibilities:
  • Accountable for the development and deployment of processes and resources, for each clinical trial in the portfolio. Ensures that all processes are established globally to provide the organization with efficiency through standardization and economies of scale and scope, allowing cross-functional teams to collect, process, summarize, and analyze clinical data across all therapeutic areas.
  • Establishes the optimal geographic footprint to support clinical operations, focusing on speed, agility, and quality. Ensures appropriate staffing models are implemented to match the geographic footprint and that operations are streamlined and efficient. Provides strategic direction and oversight of resource planning, staffing, budget, and management of teams and technology, both at the macro level (organization and program) and micro level (clinical trial).
  • Leads, directly, large global organizations consisting of both employees, contractors, and functional service providers. Oversees process integration and portfolio transition of acquired companies. Oversees and governs operations strategy development based on business imperatives and intended outcomes, by relating solutions to AbbVie's clinical and operational environment.
  • Maintains clear line of sight to competitor activity, analyzing both industry and cross-industry operational advancement and leverages appropriately. Builds partnerships where advantageous and identifies opportunities for cross-sponsor co-development of process and operational strategy. Participates in industry consortiums. Serves as key external AbbVie representative.
  • Owns, authors, and submits strategic enterprise operational project requests - all tied to defined strategy - supported by appropriate cost analyses, and pharmaceutical development's strategic prioritization. As an executive sponsor, employs defined governance mechanisms to ensure design, development, deployment, and implementation are well managed, and that appropriate change management is conducted - all in partnership with both business stakeholders, and IT when appropriate.
  • Acts as an executive representative of business stakeholders as a driver of AbbVie's R&D program and clinical trials execution. Possesses deep understanding of global regulations impacting clinical trial execution. Acts as a consultant to AbbVie cross-functional operations partners to build a thoughtful strategy that reflects regulation and policy.
  • Accountable for representing AbbVie with regulatory authorities, contributing to policy discussions, and authoring guidance and policy. Represents AbbVie as a member of industry associations and presents at operations forums on behalf of AbbVie, building industry recognition.
  • Recognizes opportunities for the application of operations support technology as the business environment changes. Consults with pharmaceutical development's automation strategy owners.
  • Responsible for data quality and operations across TAs and for introducing and harmonizing process and best practices across TAs.
  • Serves as a senior member of the development leadership teams responsible for creation of strategic plans, goals, and intended outcomes related to operations/technologies, playing a critical governance role. Sets precedent as an effective decision-maker, showing recognition of trade-offs across the portfolio. Serves as an expert operations leader and trusted business adviser, ensuring that cross-functional processes meet strategic objectives and can be effectively operationalized.

Qualifications

Basic:
  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree (e.g. MBA, PhD) preferred
  • 18+ years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or as an operations leader in an applicable industry
  • Broad business orientation, including advanced operations methodology
  • Open to new ideas and the ability to connect the dots within and across groups and functions
  • Proven ability to form and implement cross-functional matrix teams. Ability to model performance behaviors, to practice those behaviors as an example, and to manage behaviors - both of leaders and line - appropriately
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively network, to influence at multiple levels and across multiple functions, to build strong relationships through demonstrated diplomacy and domain expertise when working cross-functionally
  • Ability to work across functional and geographical boundaries in order to develop strategies and plans, and to deliver results
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills. Sets team priorities, and adjusts as needed
