Medical Science Liaisons are trusted and credible medical/scientific experts that provide relevant, reliable and unbiased scientific information to Avanir Key Opinion Leaders and other key individuals impacting the care of patients. Responsible for developing creative and innovative strategies for addressing the specific needs of key external audiences in the long-term care space. Goals will be accomplished by the development and execution of a regional medical plan in concert with the overall medical strategy.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Identify, develop and maintain professional relationships with LTC Chain Key Decision Makers, KOLs, GPOs and societies to ensure communication of current and emerging medical and scientific information products, resulting in improvement of optimal patient care and outcomes.
  • Develop and execute engagement plans to align education between LTC Chain Key Decision Makers, KOLs, GPOs and societies;
  • Develop prioritized plans for top tier KOLs/institutions/societies;
  • Establish line of communication with commercial partners to assure coordinated activity and a customer view of one company;
  • Advocate for disease awareness to address patients unmet medical need;
  • Facilitate communication between Avanir and clinical decision makers;.
  • Facilitate and moderate scientific peer discussions including advisory panels, and education programs;
  • Arrange or conduct educational programs ensuring compliance with company policies;.
  • Attend regional and national medical conferences to build advocacy for Avanir and our areas of focus;
  • Collect competitive intelligence and analyze data (symposia, abstracts, poster presentations, etc.);

Education/ Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (MD, DO, PharmD, PhD, PA or ARNP) required.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a clinical role supporting LTC facilities or minimum 3 years or more in a field medical affairs role in biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry.
  • Neurology experience preferred, psychiatry or geriatric experience beneficial.
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate scientific / medical of drug products to the medical community.
  • Excellent data analysis skills; strong understanding of clinical databases
  • Ability to work under deadline in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of flexibility
  • Excellent problem-solving skills required
  • Ability to effectively facilitate meetings and cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work independently and function effectively as a team member
  • Project management experience (timelines, documents, reporting) preferred
  • Ability to travel at least 50%; attend regional and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders and scientific research.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.).

Physical Requirements:

This position primarily works in an office environment. It requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and frequent walking. Daily use of a computer, phone, office equipment and other computing and digital devices is required. May be required to stand for extended periods when facilitating meetings or walking in the facilities. Some local travel may be necessary, so the ability to travel by plane, operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid Driver's license and/or effectively navigate public transportation is required. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee must be able to read and respond to interoffice communications as well as effectively participate in meetings. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to lift up to 20 lbs., pull, push, carry, handle or feel. The employee is required to carry, handle items, reach with arms and hands, to stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear. Mental demands may require prolonged concentration, reading comprehension, understanding and interpretation of concepts, ideas and philosophies. The physical demands of the position described herein are essential functions of the job and employees must be able to successfully perform these tasks for extended periods.
