Position Overview:

Molecular Templates is seeking a seasoned and highly-skilled professional to lead discovery projects from conception through to lead selection in pharmaceutical or biotech sector. The VP will be responsible for strategic oversite of projects partnered with an external collaborator (i.e., pharma/ biotech), from project initiation through lead selection. Key components of this position include strategic planning, data driven decision making, communication both within MTEM and with external partners, and definition of project parameters (including project aim definition, resource and timeline planning). In addition, the position contributes to the strategic design and forward progress of in vivo efficacy models. This ideal candidate will have experience in and enthusiasm for biologic drug development in oncology, and/or hematology research areas, with expertise with in vivo model development. The position requires excellent communication skill and the ability to manage competing priorities and to provide thought-leadership and deliver results.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead externally partnered projects from target identification/ nomination through to lead selection; determine scientific and technical strategies
    • Collaborate with functional groups in R&D to initiate and support the discovery and development of biologic therapeutics for partnered programs
    • Identify internal and outsourced resources needed to complete projects
    • Develop budget and staffing projections to support team's goals
    • Make data driven decisions to drive the project forward
    • Ability to focus team resources and overcome obstacles to complete project objectives.
  • Oversee design and develop in vivo efficacy models for antibody fragment -based biologics (ETBs)
  • Analyze data, summarize conclusions and plans for further action, and present results to team members and management in a clear and timely manner
  • Communicate project progress, data and interpretations to external partners
  • Maintain knowledge of scientific trends drug discovery, oncology, and other indications as needed
  • Use professional concepts and company policies and procedures to solve a wide range of difficult problems in creative and practical ways
  • Execute and manage new projects, as needed

  • Ph.D. in Life Sciences with direct experience in the pharma or biotech industry is required.
  • Proven and demonstrated experience leading a discovery project from conception through to lead selection in an industry setting.
  • Experience with in vivo model development and evaluation.
  • Experience with development of biologic agents such as immunotoxins, fusion proteins and/or antibody fragments.
  • Experience in oncology or hematology research, strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and statistical analysis software

Reporting Structure:

This position does not currently have supervisory responsibilities. This position reports to SVP, Research & Development.
