The Preclinical Safety department at AbbVie relies on the zebrafish model for some of its investigative toxicology research. We are seeking an independently motivated scientist to support these efforts. The successful candidate will design and conduct bioanalytical assays focused on a wide range of toxicological endpoints. The position will be responsible for study design and execution, data analysis and interpretation, and the reporting of results to the wider team. The position will also have some responsibility supporting histopathology and molecular toxicology assays that contribute evidence to other toxicology studies.

Detailed responsibilities
  • Consult scientific literature to help guide experimental design and to develop new methods to interrogate test article toxicity.
  • Prepare test article solutions under the guidance of a formulations expert.
  • Handle zebrafish embryos, larvae, and adults; expose the younger life stages to test article.
  • Using microscopy, video-tracking, spectrophotometry, qPCR, ELISA, and other techniques, establish the relative toxicities of drug candidates.
  • Collect samples for analysis of drug levels; complete forms for clear sample identification to be communicated to the DMPK team.
  • Analyze data using Microsoft Excel, Graphpad Prism, or other data analysis software; analyze images using imaging tools.
  • Support molecular biology efforts designed around investigative toxicology.
  • Under the direction of a histopathologist, prepare histology samples from fish toxicology studies.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, either written or verbal, that convey the need and potential impact of the research, how it was conducted, and the results.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelors or Masters in a related scientific discipline and 0-3 (BS) or 0 (MS) years of laboratory-based experience is required.

Experience
  • The following skills are required: pipetting; light and fluorescent microscopy; Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.
  • The following are strongly preferred: ELISA; PCR; spectrometry
  • The following are preferred: electron microscopy; histology; biomarker discovery; molecular biology e.g. DNA cloning and sequencing; CRISPR or other genome manipulation tool.

Job level will be commensurate with experience
