As part of the Amgen's Manufacturing Operations organization, our Amgen Woburn Manufacturing (AWM) site manufactures oncolytic virus based end-to-end drug substance and drug products for the global market. This role of Senior Manager, EHS for AWM reports directly to the AWM Site Head and dotted line to the Amgen Global Executive Director, EHSS. This role has responsibility for driving EHSS performance and culture at the site in Woburn, MA and is a member of the site leadership team.

Responsibilities:
  • Aligning, advancing and implementing EHSS strategy across the site including governance and dashboards.
  • Engaging business partners and other partners to align business strategy with EHSS strategy and delivery; identifying and engaging key players and collaborators to help craft a consensus.
  • Translating Amgen's EHSS vision for advancing their philosophy and culture into detailed actions.
  • Leading development and implementation of new EHSS, policies, strategies and initiatives, aligning those efforts with the site's business strategies and priorities.
  • Evaluating existing and potential future operations for compliance with regulations and conformance to Amgen standards; reviewing and evaluating current and future facility, process and equipment design for applicable EHSS attributes.
  • Applying extensive knowledge of regulatory impacts on business operations to develop compliance plans and demonstrating professional level of knowledge in a multitude of EHSS program areas.
  • Recruits, mentors, develops, leads, deploys and retains a hard-working and diverse team of EHSS professionals who will work closely with site to build innovative and effective EHSS solutions for the different site functions.
  • Providing leadership to staff by defining the vision and goals needed to achieve business outcomes and be responsible for the fulfillment of site EHSS programs and applicable initiatives.
  • Collaborating with the various EHSS organizations in Amgen, including Global EHSS, site-based EHSS teams, and others as appropriate, to ensure EHSS activities are executed optimally.
  • Understanding current standard methodologies and emerging technologies in EHSS and using technology to drive innovation in the business.
  • Travel: Domestic and International travel up to 20%.
  • Ensures safe and compliant current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) operations.
  • Establishes sound plans the enable Amgen's operational and strategic imperatives.
  • Leads and coordinates resources to ensure product quality standards and supply plans are met within planned budget.
  • Contributes to the business results through quality of decisions, results and advice.
  • Sets challenging performance expectations and provides timely feedback.
  • Develops and implements metrics to record and lead successful, timely accomplishment of assigned goals, objectives and projects.
  • Delivers strong results consistent with compliance requirements and Amgen values.
  • Responsible for conducting all production related investigations, ensuring consistency and compliance with external regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares and maintains department budget and workforce model.
  • Executes with a sense of purpose and drives course correction where appropriate.
  • Anticipates and adapts to environmental factors and analyzes and forecasts business trends.
  • Crafts compelling strategies the help delivering the company's aspiration.
  • Plans and executes the implementation of major change efforts.
  • Builds empowered teams that put patients and Amgen first.
  • May represent department to regulatory authorities.
  • Develop short/long term strategies, goals, objectives, and associated budgets required to ensure appropriate manufacturing operations and site execution.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with key site and network partners.
  • Provide organizational leadership of the local EHSS team. Lead all aspects of team's talent management, including performance, career development, and succession planning.
  • Lead the EHS Operational Excellence program and its performance.
  • Develop short/long term strategies, goals, objectives, and associated budgets required to ensure appropriate EHS and site implementation.


Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of EHSS experience

OR

Master's degree and 6 years of EHSS experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 8 years of EHSS experience

OR

Associate's degree and 10 years of EHSS experience

OR

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of EHSS experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • BS degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Science, or Engineering.
  • 10+ years of EHSS work experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry leading EHSS programs.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, radiation safety and industrial safety principles and a consistent record in maturing programs and processes.
  • Relevant EHSS Certifications such as Certified Health Physicist, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biological Safety Professional.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong presentation skills, ability to provide status updates to all levels of management.
  • Demonstrated team leadership, mentoring and staff development skills.
  • Ability to establish and communicate EHSS goals and objectives to staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, drive, sense of purpose, energy level and problem-solving.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with other functional areas.
  • Experience in matrixed, cross-site or global network environments.
  • Coach and develop staff while positively advancing the culture of the organization.
  • Strong leadership experience and aptitude with ability to lead and partner in a sophisticated, matrix environment.
  • Experience and track record of compliance in a highly regulated GMP environment.
  • Diverse operations background in the manufacture of biologics with aseptic processing, drug substance and/or drug products focus
  • Operational Excellence approach with diverse, and profound Continuous Improvement methodology experience (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM), etc.)
