We are seeking a multidisciplinary scientist to join the Discovery Platform and Technologies (DPT) department with a specific focus on designing and developing proof of concept experiments to advance novel therapeutic modalities, methods, and platforms involving the use of small molecules to influence immunological responses. The successful candidate will be adept in identifying emerging therapeutic opportunities and subsequently apply their skills in cell biology, chemical biology, immunobiology, and analytical techniques to demonstrate new possibilities for targeting disease. This person will leverage these skills as a member of the cross-functional team to support AbbVie's drug discovery pipeline while interacting with a broad range of Drug Discovery and Development scientists to collectively build a leadership position in the chemical immunobiology space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, plan, and execute experiments to demonstrate experimental proofs of concept for novel therapeutic modalities
  • Utilize cell culture hoods, incubators, and related equipment to execute experimental work
  • Prepare samples from cells and tissues for multiple downstream analyses such as mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, and biochemical assays
  • Propose structures of non-traditional modalities for evaluation of therapeutic potential in cellular disease contexts
  • Propose and lead external collaborations where opportunities align with team mission
  • Interface and collaborate with colleagues and project teams to develop plans for the pursuit of emerging therapeutics
  • Serve as lead author on external publications


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, Master's Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.
  • Experience with modulating cells with small molecules or biologics
  • Experience with cellular and T cell assays, enrichment of proteins from cells and tissues, and downstream sample handling for bio-analytical measurements
  • Strong knowledge of small molecule interaction and potential chemical reactivity with proteins
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with a strong publication and/or speaking record with an emphasis on novel scientific approaches
  • Can-do attitude/team-oriented/open to tackling new challenges
  • High attention to detail, creativity in problem-solving, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to successfully work independently

  • Post-doctoral experience or 3-10 years previous industry experience
  • Experience with antigenicity assays, mass spectrometry, biochemical assays, flow cytometry, and chemical synthesis
