The Environmental Specialist is responsible for providing full time environmental support to the site operations and will ensure that all practices comply with all regulatory requirements. This individual will be responsible for coordinating regulatory programs, inspection programs, training, and its permitting applications with the Director of Health, Safety and Environmental (‘HSE"). This individual proactively establishes, manages, and administers all plans, permits and programs to ensure both environmental compliance and the health and safety of employees at Bachem. The Environmental Specialist will work with the Director of HSE to implement programs, policies, and assessments to ensure the company is in compliance with all federal, state, and local internal health and safety rules. In addition, this individual will be responsible for eliminating and/or controlling any hazardous conditions resulting from human error and equipment operation, which may lead to human injury and/or property damage.

Your Tasks:

  • The incumbent works closely with the Director, HSE and other personnel to ensure compliance with all internal Company policies, federal, state, and local laws, statutes, ordinances, codes and regulations applicable to Bachem
  • Ensures that all activities comply with Bachem and outside regulatory requirements
  • Maintain, develop and implement HSE programs and provide expert technical support to ensure program success
  • Ensures all tasks are completed for facility to maintain environmental compliance
  • Perform periodic and random documented daily inspection of all environmental systems / processes and evaluate the environment, equipment and processes in working areas to ensure compliance with government environmental regulations and industry standards
  • Conducts regular self-audits to ensure complete regulatory compliance; report gaps to the Director, HSE. Lead corrective action initiatives by identifying internal or external resources, providing feedback on noted deficiencies, and recommending solutions to achieve compliance
  • Performs routine industrial and hazardous waste management activities such as vendor scheduling and waste haul oversight, and manifest tracking and filing
  • Provide daily guidance and direction in environmental programs at the employee/supervisory level to ensure a common and effective approach
  • Evaluation and management of outside services and consultants related to environmental
  • Manages CAPEX/OPEX environmental projects
  • Maintains environmental files, records, documentation, as required for all regulatory agencies; modifies and implements compliance tracking problems and recordkeeping system. This includes, but not limited to: air, storm water, industrial waste water, hazardous substances, and special waste
  • Maintains inspection reports and daily advises the Director, HSE of findings, deficiencies and remedial efforts needed to eliminate deficiencies
  • Provide daily and weekly reports to the Director, HSE
  • Create and distribute environmental manuals, documents and records as needed
  • Liaison with personnel regarding violations and hold respective supervisory personnel accountable for deficiencies
  • Educates all levels of employees on complex compliance and technical issues
  • Maintain and update as needed SOPs (e.g. plans, programs) for all environmental practices, equipment
  • Ensures that each SOP has a training power point. Training modules are developed for both affected and awareness employees
  • Audit checklists are developed for each SOP to ensure compliance with the SOP
  • Quizzes are developed for each SOP to ensure understanding.
  • Process flow charts are developed
  • Job Hazard Analysis are included (if needed)
  • Establish (as necessary), manage and administer all environmental plans and programs including, but not limited to: air permits, SARA 311, SARA 312, SARA 313, wastewater, SPCC, storm water, corporate social responsibility, and special waste
  • Assists in maintaining, updating and coordinating company environmental training programs
  • Perform and contribute to the site training plans by conducting employee orientations, emergency response training, and coordination of modular training programs for the operations groups
  • Develop and lead the environmental committee meetings
  • Attend meetings, workshops, training, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions
  • Perform hazard and risk analysis to reduce the risk of safety incidents, and provide productivity tools to maintain plant safety
  • Develop and lead the environmental compliance team. The team will review all plans, including but not limited to: Storm water pollution prevention plan, California Accidental Release Program, Hazardous Substances, etc.
  • Participates in the design qualification process for facilities, installations, equipment, and instrumentation to ensure compliance with environmental
  • Assist in the development of technical documents (e.g. Project Scope Summary)
  • Investigate incidents and accidents to identify their causes and find ways to prevent them in the future
  • Lead the Emergency Response Team and comply with all company policies. Respond to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety/security concerns


Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related scientific field such as biology, or chemistry.
  • 3-5 years' experience in the manufacturing, chemical or pharmaceutical industry
  • Familiarity and experience with local, state and federal codes as they apply to the environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent Excel Skills
  • Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to effectively organize, multitask, and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment
  • Ability to communicate in a proactive and solution-focused manner, including keeping management aware of potential issues
  • Awareness and understanding of HSE policy and management system, the importance of conforming to HSE policies and procedures, and consequences of failing to comply with HSE policies and procedures
  • Ability to use test equipment, such as air monitors and water
  • Detail oriented with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems
  • Ability to work independently and manage one's time
  • Communicate effectively and ability to function well in a team environment


Preferred:

  • Bilingual with fluency in Spanish
