As a Scientist you will perform downstream bioprocess development at pilot scale within the Gene Therapy Process Development organization. You will be responsible for the downstream scale-up and non-GMP production of recombinant AAV for pre-clinical programs and support technology transfer of production systems to clinical and commercial manufacturing.

With your deep knowledge in the discipline, you will be an active team member who influences at the project team level. You will be using your scientific judgment to adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience and consulting others. Your ability to plan will help in preparing short-term work activities on projects. Your creativity in developing novel processes and new ideas will be used frequently. You will undertake mentoring activities to guide your team members.

This position will join a larger team of scientists across multiple sites focused on advancing Pfizer's gene therapy platform. You will be a key member of the Gene Therapy Process Development team that will support the development of gene therapy products. It is your innovative scientific temperament that will help in making Pfizer ready to achieve new milestones and help patients across the globe.

How You Will Achieve It
  • Contribute to achievement of goals and influence at the work group/project team level.
  • Utilize extensive practical experience and the application of engineering principles in scaling up purification processes.
  • Utilize knowledge of modern pilot scale equipment including clarification and AKTA chromatography systems
  • Support laboratory activities by monitoring lab equipment and maintaining a clean and safe working environment. Develop and communicate production schedule, forecast consumable usage, manage consumable inventory and reordering
  • Plan and execute laboratory studies, make detailed observations, and analyze and interpret data.
  • Evaluate data and provide clear reports that can be shared and transferred to and from cross-functional teams
  • Take the initiative to solve scientific problems and contribute to their resolution. Able to work in a fast paced team environment with changing priorities. Schedule work to meet project deliverables.
  • Coordinate and support tech transfer activities by drafting protocols, reviewing data, and writing reports.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to troubleshoot technical issues, to plan and carry out experiments independently, and to train/mentor colleagues.
  • Work with potentially hazardous chemicals using appropriate personal protective safety equipment in a properly controlled environment.

Qualifications

Must-Have
  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline or biological science or related field with 7+ years' experience or Master's with 5+ (not including graduate work).
  • Extensive practical experience in downstream development at pilot scale (e.g., 50-250 L scales) in production of biologics is required.
  • Proven ability to scale purification unit operations from bench top to pilot scale, and from pilot to full scale with thorough understanding of engineering principles in scaling of purification processes
  • Experience with modern pilot scale equipment such as chromatography systems
  • Organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently or in a collaborative environment


Nice-to-Have
  • Experience with mammalian recombinant AAV virus purification
  • Working knowledge of clarification and AKTA chromatography systems.
  • Position requires light lifting (30lbs/15kg)
  • Position requires periods of standing, sitting or walking
  • Position will require occasional off shift work in small scale process development and manufacturing support.
  • Possibility of occasional travel to other Pfizer sites and/or CMOs in USA/EU as appropriate to support process tech transfer.
