Job Details

Amgen is a leading global biotechnology company, with a mission to serve patients around the world. As a science-based, patient-focused organization, we discover and develop innovative therapies to treat serious illnesses. Our medicines have made a dramatic difference in the lives of millions. To underpin our commitment to serve patients, Amgen is developing our Translational Science focus with modern molecular and cellular science and pathology laboratories, designed to discover and develop valuable biomarkers in support of clinical programs.

The Clinical Biomarkers & Diagnostics (CBD) department at Amgen is looking for a highly motivated Data Scientist with deep expertise in next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms and data analysis, single cell (sc) platforms and data analysis, statistical modeling, clinical interpretation and reporting and some background in biology. This is a high-visibility, individual contributor role preferring experience within matrix environments representing the function and requiring the development of methods to support the entirety of the clinical portfolio at Amgen.

Who you are
  • Motivated, hands-on, analytical, detail-oriented, data and science-driven, independent and accountable, with a track record of productivity
  • Have demonstrated expertise in genomics, epigenomics and functional genomics within clinical settings
  • Have performed and enjoy in-depth hands-on computational/data analysis work associated with the identification and interpretation of genomic variants
  • Familiar with state of the art centralized and distributed NGS assays and their relative strengths
  • Familiar with variant call QC, annotation, effect prediction, and clinical annotations within a clinical setting
  • Experienced with HPC/Cloud-Ops
  • Expert in Python and/or R and associated data-processing and machine-learning frameworks and aware of good programming practices
  • Biology-driven, with a strong foundation in molecular biology/genetics; you are as comfortable discussing wetlab aspects of NGS assays as you are discussing data analysis
  • An excellent communicator with dynamic interpersonal skills, situational awareness and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary, matrix setting
  • Are comfortable representing your function within a matrix setting to deliver best value to programs in development
  • An excellent manager of multiple tasks in parallel
  • Have superior work ethics and strong motivation to positively impacting the lives of patients

Strongly Recommended:
  • Experience with single cell platforms and analysis of data
  • Experience with the development of therapeutic molecules
  • Degree in computer science/bioinformatics/computational biology/statistics
  • Experience in immunology

What you will do
  • Represent the clinical biomarkers & diagnostics team in Amgen program/portfolio teams as a biomarker analysis lead
  • Assess biochemical coverage, patient stratification and selection of indications in Amgen's early clinical development programs
  • Interface cross-functionally with the early development teams, assay laboratories, in-vitro diagnostics and biomarker representatives
  • Develop translational informatics analysis infrastructure to enable the analysis of NGS data/Epigenomics assays/single-cell assays from clinical trials
  • Develop innovative best-practices for the next generation of clinical bioinformatics, such as the utilization of ctDNA-derived tumor burden as a prognostic biomarker/surrogate end point
  • Work with biologists, especially in immuno-oncology, to leverage information on our targeted biological pathways along with development of computational algorithms to manage and mine internal and external genomics, GWAS, NGS and other high-content databases
  • Develop tools for data integration, management, visualization, analysis and presentation and provide leadership and expertise in those domains
