Bristol-Myers Squibb's newest R&ED site located in Cambridge is in the heart of a vibrant ecosystem of world-class science, innovation, and business opportunities. The Head of Strategy and Research Operations at our Cambridge, MA R&D site partners with Research and Early Development site leadership and enterprise business partners to enable industry-leading site performance that delivers value to our patients, the local community, and our company.

We are seeking a self-motivated, detail-orientated, and collaborative team member to partner effectively with functional leadership and lead day-to-day site and laboratory operations. Core responsibilities include ensuring safe and efficient laboratory operations and site wide initiatives. The role will also design and manage high-priority continuous improvement projects for R&ED.

The role will report to the Cambridge Site head and will partner closely with local and global R&ED functions, RDSP, and enterprise business partners (e.g., Finance, Human Resources, Procurement, Information Technology, Business Insights & Analytics, Facilities, Legal, Corporate Affairs, others) to enable operational excellence at our Cambridge R&ED site. Accordingly, it is critical that the candidate effectively partner with and engage a matrixed team of internal and external partners to deliver organizational alignment and value.

Core responsibilities are:
  • Implement the site operating model and measuring performance in partnership with the global business partners listed above, ensuring: Strong site operational performance, on-target financial performance , efforts to optimize workflow, efficient space planning, and robust business continuity
  • Driving change management initiatives, including the combination of 2 Cambridge sites to one new location; leading all operational integration activities for 2 Thematic Research Clusters and Translational Medicine; partnering with site and global staff to build new state of the art research laboratories and capabilities for Oncology and Immunology thematic research centers, due to open mid 2023
  • Pro-actively leading the continued recovery (return to site) initiatives for our lab workers and office workers throughout the pandemic.
  • Matrix collaboration with Compliance, Environmental, Health & Safety and Global Engineering & Facilities to maintain a high level of compliance and safety through the effective monitoring and reporting of metrics.
  • Developing and managing the site laboratory operations strategy and plan (equipment, supplies, procedures, metrics, roles, responsibilities, etc.); advising site scientific staff on business and laboratory operations best practices
  • Set and drive a culture of continuous improvement, including reliability, quality, productivity and efficiency
  • Leading employee engagement activities centered on our Innovation, Cooperation, and Engagement program (including corporate sponsorships, academic partnerships, team-based rewards & recognition)
  • Enable site performance by monitoring the external landscape to stay abreast of industry trends in laboratory management and business operations, and incorporating operational excellence
  • Lead a local team of assigned direct reports (2-3) to pro-actively design, manage high priority, site-specific and global initiatives that deliver tangible scientific and business value.

  • Undergraduate (BA/BS) degree required; advanced degree strongly preferred
  • At least 10-12 years of professional experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical industry
  • Scientific experience in Discovery and Translational Medicine preferred
  • Business operations experience required; biopharma R&D laboratory operations experience preferred
  • Experience leading a team, setting and communicating strategic vision, evaluating and coaching performance.
  • Demonstrated strength in assessing business-critical needs, defining clear and measurable business outcomes, translating strategy into operational plans, delivering projects on time / on budget, and delivering outcomes with efficiency
  • Strong business acumen and comfort in agile delivery and learning environment
  • Highly effective written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong presentation, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills; daily interactions with CEO-2 leadership; ensure connectivity across multiple functions within a site and with the enterprise
  • Ability to build relationships and influence, and drive organizational engagement
