NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to discovering and developing the next generation of medicines for the treatment of serious diseases. Our experienced scientific team has joined forces with an impressive group of industry professionals, Nobel Laureates and other distinguished researchers to build a company where innovation and cutting-edge science has provided the foundation for a robust drug discovery engine that has a track record of generating one new IND candidate per year. NGM’s current pipeline of clinical-stage programs consists of five drug candidates targeting liver and metabolic diseases, retinal diseases and cancer. The most advanced drug candidate, aldafermin (NGM282), is in Phase 2b clinical studies in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and is wholly-owned by NGM. Another drug candidate, NGM621, is in a Phase 2 study in geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). NGM’s strategic collaboration with Merck, with a current term running to March 2022, provides us with the resources and flexibility to pursue our ambitious R&D goals and further extend our pipeline of novel drug candidates.
The Immune Oncology team at NGM is excited to hire a Research Associate. The ideal candidate will be skilled at working with immune cells and tissue samples, capable of keeping track of multiple simultaneous projects, and fascinated by the intersection of genetics, cancer, and the human immune system. This role is perfect for a passionate young biologist with a few years of substantive prior lab experience.
The candidate will be part of a team of scientists developing novel immuno-oncology therapeutics using techniques such as:
- Isolation and culture of primary immune cells, using magnetic isolation techniques
- Differentiation of primary immune cells, including dendritic cells and macrophages
- Performing in vitro functional immunoassays, such as T cell cytotoxicity assays, MDSC suppression assays, phagocytosis assays, or mixed lymphocyte reactions
- Processing and staining immune cells, cell lines, or dissociated animal tissues for flow cytometry
- Analysis of cytokine levels in culture supernatants or plasma samples by Luminex or ELISA
- Gene expression analysis, including purifying RNA from cultured cells or tissue samples and running real-time PCR or Nanostring
- Processing and analyzing tissue samples, including collecting tissues (tumors, bone marrow, spleens, peripheral blood, or lymph nodes), processing and staining samples by flow cytometry, and extracting RNA from tissue samples for gene expression analysis
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Collaborate closely with a group of approximately 12 scientists in a matrixed organization
- Independently design, execute, and analyze experiments
- Self-manage workflow for multiple projects simultaneously
- Propose novel techniques or strategies to address scientific questions
- Maintain and update detailed laboratory records in Dotmatics
- Present experimental plans and results to team members at project team meetings
Previous Experience Preferred
- Degree in life sciences, with substantive laboratory experience
- At least 2 years of experience working in an immunology research environment
- Experience working with primary immune cells in a BSL2 facility
- Strong proficiency with data analysis and visualization using software such as Excel, GraphPad, and FlowJo
