Research Scientist, Bioinformatics

At Kite pharma we are revolutionizing the treatment for cancers through immunotherapy through novel breakthrough technology. We have developed and launched best in class CAR-T therapy Yescarta, currently curing patients from previously intractable b-cell malignancies. We are seeking a self-motivated and ambitious individual with strong work ethic to join our Cell Therapy research Center in Santa Monica, reporting to the Sr. Director of Bioinformatics, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment to support a growing R&D portfolio, to build an organization centered on cutting-edge technology, and to develop models based on complex high-dimensional research and clinical data sets. The position requires a solid understanding of the principles and practices of pharmaceutical science in a regulated environment and will work closely with the discovery research, translational medicine, clinical development, and product development teams.

We are looking for a Research Scientist with a deep understanding of the current experimental methodologies used in the biological space, including high-throughput genomics and proteomics technologies as well as predictive modeling with experience in statistical analysis and bioinformatics algorithms. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to synthesize scientific questions into a coherent research effort and communicate scientific findings across the different research functions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the establishment, analysis, and interpretation of DNA and RNA NGS sequencing data and build analytical workflows for automated deployment of bioinformatics tools in a cloud and high-performance computing environments, including SaaS bioinformatics providers like Seven Bridges, for interpreting NGS data.
  • Analyze and interpret large molecular data sets, including mining of immunological datasets for e.g. biomarkers, therapeutic targets, cancer mutations.
  • Serve as a liaison in technology and knowledge transfer efforts in bioinformatics solutions from external partners in academia and industry.
  • Contribute to company-wide scale-out of bioinformatics infrastructure and solutions as well as external scientific discussions on technology evaluation.
  • Work closely with research and cross-functional teams to jointly advance the development and improvement of manufacturing processes, designing fit T Cells and enhancements to CAR T-Cells programs.
  • Analyze and interpret molecular large data sets, including mining of immunological datasets e.g. biomarkers, therapeutic targets, cancer mutations.
  • Coordinate deliverables jointly with clinicians, molecular biologists, IT, commercial and other departments.


Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a closely related field and 6+ years of post-doctoral academic or industry experience.
  • Full proficiency in R and/or Python, experience in Linux environments and cloud computing systems and the development of statistical methods and algorithms is required.
  • Proficiency building and maintaining large scale bioinformatics analysis pipelines for NGS data, and statistical programming languages.
  • Hands-on experience with the bioinformatics analysis of single-cell, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, and mass cytometry data analysis is required.
  • Evidence of a successful academic or industry track-record is required
  • Hands-on experience applying computational tools to study cancer mutations and T cell immunity, in particular, experience in Illumina sequencing data and NGS pipelines, analysis of cancer genomic datasets is required.
  • Experience with remote data storage and management (e.g. Amazon Web Services) is required
  • Strong understanding of statistics and the ability to generate robust statistical models for predicting outcomes in multidimensional data.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • A proactive, self-motivated and ambitious person with a strong work ethic, ability to work in a dynamic environment and able to adapt to changing priorities.
