AbbVie Immunology, located in Worcester, MA offers a unique working environment of design-synthesis for drug discovery. The position of Drug Designer leverages new and established in silico techniques to solve key design issues in close collaboration with active research teams, structural biologists, experts in organic synthesis, purification and structure analysis.

Job Description:

AbbVie Immunology located in Worcester, MA is soliciting strong candidates for our medicinal chemistry team with a focus on drug design. Candidates for this position are expected to be able to quickly adapt to existing software, engage project teams with designs for the next targets for synthesis, extend what is possible computationally and improve the efficiency of the drug design cycle. Candidates with a background in medicinal chemistry and application of computational methods that can enhance AbbVie's expertise and efficiency within chemistry teams are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required Skills:

  • Industrial medicinal chemistry experience and knowledge of scientific principles, concepts and methods in medicinal chemistry/modeling are essential
  • Experience interpreting 3D structural information including experience/familiarity with common modeling software such as Schrodinger or MOE, cheminformatics tools such as KNIME and data visualization software such as Spotfire
  • Expert in structure activity and structure property relationship analysis and interpreting PK and biological data
  • Ability to contribute to research that leads to the creation of drugs
  • Good oral/written communication, planning and teamwork skills are expected
  • Problem solver that sees opportunity in challenges or could suggest alternative strategy of design


Basic Qualifications:

Position will be hired based on level of experience.

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Organic/Medicinal/Computational chemistry with typically 10-12+ (BS), 8-10+ (MS), or 0-4+ (PhD) years of relevant post-degree experience
  • Candidate must be highly collaborative and thrive in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Strong IT skills and familiarity with in silico drug discovery tools
  • Strong organizational, communication, and inter-personal skills

Additional Desired Skills:

Proficiency in various hardware/software platforms including LINUX, the ability to code flexible, scalable, and complex programs using either written or verbal design specifications and/or at least one year of experience in scripting in Python.
