Within AbbVie's Comparative Medicine function, direct research and project activities with emphasis on emerging technologies that enables the translatability of AbbVie's model development by effectively mentoring, guiding and/or supervising scientific personnel. Independently conceive, execute and communicate novel multi-disciplinary research or development strategies that achieve project and area goals. Serve as a lead scientist on his/her own project and contribute scientific insights into multiple other projects that will also support the progressive global 3Rs Program to advance AbbVie's culture of ethical science promoting adoption of 3Rs technologies and methods where applicable.

Responsibilities
  • Effectively function as a principle investigator, generating original emerging technical ideas and research or development strategies on technologies whose development, practical applications, or both are still largely unrealized.
  • Demonstrate creative 'out of the box' thinking to solve difficult problems and champion new technologies to achieve project goals and capable of changing the status quo.
  • Independently responsible for project science within his/her area of expertise on one or more project teams.
  • Generate new scientific proposals and lead those efforts. Anticipate and critically evaluate scientific or regulatory advances or competitive threats and respond with appropriate new strategies.
  • Recognized and sought out as an expert in emerging technologies, translational imaging modalities and compound delivery and sample access technologies within the company and possibly externally.
  • Primary author of publications, presentations, regulatory documents and/or primary inventor of patents.
  • Present at leading scientific conferences.
  • Mentor/supervise a team of one or more and evaluate the performance of those individuals; is accountable for the effective performance of the team/individuals.
  • Provide consult, oversight on study design and possibly even conduct activities on innovative 3Rs research to address scientific gaps to enhance our animal research program.
  • Serve as a member of the Global Animal Welfare Committee Leadership team and provide 3Rs expertise.


Qualifications

Qualifications

  • DVM or PhD with laboratory animal training or background preferred with typically 4-6 years of experience
  • Experience in translational imaging is strongly preferred.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, perform multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and stay abreast of relevant 3Rs literature as well as publish 3Rs literature.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a principle investigator, generating original technical ideas and research or development strategies.
  • Demonstrate creative 'out of the box' thinking to solve difficult technical problems and champion new technologies to achieve project goals.
  • Recognized and sought out as an expert in his/her discipline within the company and possibly externally
  • Experienced and demonstrated success as primary author of publication, presentations, regulatory documents and/or primary inventor of patents
  • Demonstrated scientific communication and presentation skills by presenting at leading scientific conferences.
  • Encourage innovation through leadership, set expectations, and hold people accountable for their actions. Communicate both successes and failures and promote change, where necessary, to more effectively drive for results. Practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality. Competent in research methods and design using basic statistical methods and proficient in the use of statistical software (e.g. Graphpad JMP, Excel)
