Job Details

Amgen is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the Pharmacokinetics & Drug Metabolism (PKDM) department at our site in South San Francisco, California. Amgen provides a collaborative and creative culture in a company with a strong track record of innovation. Our culture encourages open dialogue and diverse views to land on the best solutions, and we help ensure our staff are equipped to excel today and tomorrow.

The department of pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism (PKDM) within Amgen is dedicated to the discovery and development of novel, effective, safe medicines. The successful candidate will work in a team environment to characterize the absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and pharmacokinetic properties of therapeutic drug candidates to achieve their full pharmacological potential. PKDM works in close partnership with disciplines such as pharmacology, toxicology, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacology and regulatory to design promising clinical therapeutic candidates, conduct preclinical development studies, support clinical evaluation and contribute to IND and NDA filings.

In this role you will add substantial scientific expertise to the discovery and non-clinical development of small molecule therapeutics, with a primary a primary focus on drug transporters. You will be responsible for establishing and optimizing in vitro assays to evaluate new chemical entities as substrates or inhibitors of drug transporters to assess and characterize the role of transporters in drug disposition. In addition, you will make meaningful and innovative contributions to the fundamental understanding of the role of drug transporters as they relate to absorption, distribution, and clearance of small molecule therapeutics.

In this position your core responsibilities are to:
  • Serve as a functional representative and subject matter expert on the transport of small molecule therapeutics, collaborating with PBPK scientists across our PKDM scientific community
  • Evaluate and implement emerging in vitro and in silico tools to support the prediction of transporter-mediated pharmacokinetics (PK) and drug interactions (DDIs) in humans
  • Articulate risk and mitigation strategies for human PK and DDI predictions
  • Design and complete IND and NDA-enabling studies and reports to support regulatory submissions

Your specific contributions will depend on your expertise, interests, training, and experience. You will also have opportunities to learn and obtain experience with PKDM strategies for the discovery and non-clinical development of biological therapeutics.

In addition to the core responsibilities, the position provides the opportunity to pursue scientific inquiries into the fundamental physiological and biochemical factors that determine the absorption, distribution, and clearance of protein therapeutics. A collaborative and highly capable scientific community at Amgen is available to support these efforts. Interactions and collaboration with academic and other external scientists are encouraged.
