Executive Director, Biologics Optimization

We are looking for a highly motivated, hardworking individual to lead our Biologics Optimization function. Our laboratories convert prioritized antibody repertoires (and additional novel proteins) into lead biologic therapeutics, with affinities, activities, cross-species specificities, valencies and manufacturability. The laboratory also works closely with Process Development colleagues to develop and evaluate protein scaffolds and architectures for the improvement of Amgen's innovative biologics platform. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute directly to the discovery of potential medicines through sophisticated cellular and protein engineering on a wide variety of therapeutic targets derived from human genetics and biological insight.

Reporting into the Vice President of Biologics, the Executive Director, Biologics Optimization will be responsible for multiple laboratories engaged in biotherapeutics discovery using a wide range of ground breaking modeling, cell biology and bioprocess techniques with key responsibilities for scientific outreach and engagement with academic, governmental and non-profit biologics laboratories. Responsibilities will include:
  • Making operational decisions to perfect protein targets for development into therapies
  • Co-creating with Process Development the strategies that will further advance Amgen's leading position in multi-specific biologics, novel engineered proteins, and live-cell therapies
  • Leading and developing a team of 50 scientists that deliver critical elements of Amgen's pipeline
  • Representing Amgen's protein engineering and cellular expression research capabilities to the academic community
Basic Qualifications:
  • PhD and/or MD and 6 years of experience in Protein Chemistry and Engineering OR
  • Master's degree and 10 years of experience in Protein Chemistry and Engineering OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 12 years of experience in Protein Chemistry and Engineering AND
  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in protein biochemistry, structural biology, bioprocess engineering or a related field
  • 15+ years of industry experience in biotherapeutics discovery
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art protein engineering, bioprocess and modeling technologies
  • Extensive knowledge and practical experience in cellular and protein engineering, and the delivery of clinically meaningful therapies
  • Ability to lead a large and highly sophisticated industrialized scientific laboratory
  • Demonstrated high-level institutional leadership skills and impact that may include membership of advisory or governing boards of academic appointments, governmental funding oversight, scientific journal editor, Directorship of research facilities or institutes, Directorship of biopharmaceutical laboratories
  • Excellent presentation (written and oral) and social skills applicable to a wide variety of constituencies
