Position Overview

Nektar has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Finance & Accounting Analyst to join their Finance team.

Supports the monthly consolidation and closing of the financial reporting records by assuming responsibility to independently complete specific and significant activities such as expense recognition, accrual reviews for both Corporate and R&D/study activities, and other balance sheet analysis. Ensures the accuracy of financial and management reporting by independently completing trend analyses and reconciliation of balance sheet balances with transaction ledgers. Maintains the organization of accounts, departments and projects within the accounting systems to support all requested reporting. Reviews the accuracy of financial reports by analyzing variances between actuals and plan for significant and unusual activity. Assesses areas in which additional accruals may be necessary to cover the Company's business activities. Develops and maintains reports to support financial reporting, management requests and needs for analysis. Supports the budgeting process by assisting with updating budgets/forecasts, updating budget assumptions, and coordinating and assisting with internal reporting to business unit managers. Provides analytical support for contract negotiations, ad hoc accounting and/or budgeting requests. Supports any computer system enhancements and implementations that might impact the financial and management reporting. Performs other special projects related to analysis and activities requested by management. This position contributes to and supports the company's research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.
  • Works on significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Exercises independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Creates formal networks involving coordination among groups.
  • Financial Analysis - Assists in (1) preparing budgets and forecasts, including the annual operating plan (cash basis and GAAP basis, as needed), 3-year and 5-year plans, etc. (2) analyzing budgets, including model assumptions, received from external parties and/or collaboration partners (3) estimating and analyzing third party costs to support contract negotiations.
  • Accounting - Prepares various levels of analyses to support the monthly/quarterly close process, including preparing study accruals and any related documentation, through collaboration with internal and external business partners.
  • Reporting - Prepares budget versus actual reviews to facilitate both internal reporting to business unit managers and external reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted. A CPA and/or an MBA is highly desired. A minimum of 8 years accounting/financial analysis experience (including a minimum of 6 years corporate accounting experience) is required. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. Experience interfacing with all levels of management is a must. Must be able to demonstrate a strong attention to detail with an ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure. Must demonstrate an ability to multi-task efficiently. Strong knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word is required. Requires a thorough knowledge of GAAP, internal controls and financial computer systems.
