The Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for genetics and genomics that supports both Discovery and Development. The GRC plays an integral role towards our goal of developing world class genetics and genomics research, focusing on finding the right targets and helping us better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials. Within the GRC, the Department of Bioinformatics is responsible for data analysis and provides analytical insight for both internal and external data. This involves the identification and characterization of underlying genetic, epigenetic, or genomic factors that are associated with disease diagnosis, prognosis and response (efficacy and safety) to drug treatment, identification of new targets, and interpretation of the impact of genetic and genomic evidence from population-based studies. Contribute to multiple stages of development of targeted small molecules by supporting the implementation of scientifically driven development plans, primarily on setting up the strategy and executing on bioinformatics analysis of novel target discovery and biomarkers of interest for various projects.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Research Scientist, based in South San Francisco, California. As a member of our team, you will focus on clinical drug discovery biological research. You will be responsible to develop, maintain, and refine bioinformatics workflows and analytical tools for clinical biomarker data analysis. A strong candidate will have practical knowledge of bioinformatics tools and resources, experience with next generation sequencing (NGS) data, various high-throughput omics analysis pipeline development, integrative omics data and cloud computing, and strong background in genomics and molecular biology. Additionally, we are looking for strong leader who works collaboratively with other research scientists in a dynamic environment to support biomarker investigations and translational medicine.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide appropriate experimental design and biospecimen sampling scheme, molecular data analysis strategy and statistical support to identify mechanisms of action or resistance for small molecule therapeutics, identification of novel targets and candidate biomarkers for various programs and projects and other research objectives Work with standard bioinformatics tools, visualization packages, and omics databases/ annotations resources Develop and use bioinformatics pipelines to prepare and analyze data; work closely with data engineers in pipeline developments Analyze and work with NGS data, preferably whole genome and exome sequence data and other omics data etc. Interpret and translate data to biological knowledge Present at internal group meetings and/ or external scientific meetings

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Position will be hired based on level of experience.

  • BS, MS or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistical Genetics/Genomics, Computer Science, or Statistics/ Biostatistics with typically 14-16+ (BS), 12-14+ (MS), or 6-8+ (PhD) years of experience; Industry experience preferred
  • Proficiency in R programming; programming skills such as in C/C++ and a scripting language such as Perl or Python is desirable
  • Familiarity with SAS, JMP or JMP Genomics, OmicSoft ArraySuite are a plus
  • Demonstrated fluency in UNIX/Linux computing environment
  • Excellent working knowledge of current best practices in genetic variant discovery and validation methods
  • A proven track record in scientific publications and invited presentations at major conferences on target discovery and biomarkers.
  • Knowledge of cellular and molecular biology, oncology, and drug development processes
  • Enjoys working in a fast paced and highly collaborative dynamic environment with a diverse team to tackle complex problems
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong organizational, written, and communication skills
