Category:
Science
Lab/Area:

Finkbeiner Lab

Description:

We are looking for a Research Associate to join our group. The candidate will be a critical member of a team of biologists and engineers to leverage cutting edge microscopy to help understand how Tau protein transmission and aggregation lead to neurodegeneration in diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, and Down Syndrome. The ideal candidate would be someone who is comfortable and experienced with maintaining, handling, and generating patient stem cell derived neurons, a strong independent streak, and have the following expertise:

Must have:

• Ability to work effectively in small groups and good computer skills
• Experience with microscopy and image analysis
• Diverse cell culture experience

Preferred:

• Strong biology background, but effective at communicating with non-biologists (ie engineers)
• Experience with culturing organoids
• Experience with live fluorescence cell microscopy
• Experience with primary cell or neuronal culture

About our group:
The lab consists of BS, MS, and PhD level neuroscientists studying neurodegenerative diseases. We use different cellular, tissue, and vertebrate animal model systems, combined with cutting edge microscopy technology to answer basic biology questions and discover new drugs for terrible diseases. At the core of our research is a novel microscopy system that we have invented to collect images and time-lapse movies of fluorescently-labeled neurons in a high throughput format. We use our microscopy system to extract various types of information about how neurons respond to candidate drugs. We have collaboration with many industry and academic groups, publish our work in high profile scientific journals, and present our work at international conferences. This position will be in a small, highly collaborative multidisciplinary subgroup of the Finkbeiner lab focused on leveraging machine learning/deep learning to gain a better understanding of underlying complex biology that triggers neurodegenerative disease.

Education Required:

Minimum:

A.S. and 4+ years of relevant experience

B.S. in biological sciences, bioengineering, or related field and 2+ years of relevant experience

Skills/Experience required:

• Experience deriving quantitative data from images
• Cell Culture
• Ability to troubleshoot and use creativity to solve cutting edge problems
• Highly organized
• Statistics and data analysis
• Independent, creative, and self-motivated
• Familiarity and interest in neurodegenerative disease research

Skills/Experience preferred:

• Masters in Biology or related field
• Culturing, differentiating, and characterizing iPS derived neurons

Additional Information:

  • Title and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
  • Be a part of big ideas and consider Gladstone. Your difference will make a difference in human health.
  • Gladstone is an equal opportunity employer.
