Job Summary:
Work in an exciting and challenging legal environment by independently providing innovative and strategic legal support and solutions as the primary legal advisor for specific business functions in the Company's Administrative and Commercial function (including, for example, Medical Affairs, Sales, Marketing, Managed Markets, etc.) and/or corporate support functions (such as Human Resources, Compliance, Finance and/or IT) including, but not limited to, areas of vendor agreements, legal, business and regulatory issues. Coordination with, and appropriate supervision of, outside counsel as is required. Provides appropriate counsel and direction to other members of the Legal Affairs Department as well as serving as a mentor in order to foster their professional growth and development as well as their achievement of Company and/or departmental expectations and goals as identified by senior management.

Responsibilities:
Acts as lead legal advisor for at least one of the key and/or a combination of corporate business functions that encompasses all areas of the business of Daiichi Sankyo, Inc.

Human Resources (including Benefits)
Acts as the legal advisor for the human resources groups within DSI and other global legal entities as assigned related to human resources and benefits issues-including managing other internal and external legal counsel providing services in this area. Analyzes, applies and provides legal advice and counsel in all employment law areas including, but not limited to: FMLA, ADA, FLSA, ADEA, employee privacy, state laws on wrongful discharge, wage and hour claims, contingent worker issues, diversity initiatives, workplace environment and other employment issues. Develops contract templates and provides legal review of agreements for Human Resources. Oversees and directly supports employee discipline and termination issues. Provides legal counsel on internal investigation teams and/or leads investigations; manages certain internal investigations and other special investigations needed to be managed by the Legal Affairs Department. Drafts employment separation agreements and other personnel documents for levels of employees below executives. Provides counsel, direction, and develops guidance to support functional and organizational restructurings. Provides updates to senior management on various employment and investigational matters. Provide legal counsel to the Benefits and Compensation function, as assigned. Analyzes, reviews and revises compensation and benefits plan projects and documents. Effectively manages work of outside counsel on compensation and assigned benefits matters.

LCA
Acts as lead legal advisor for the sub-parts of Legal and Corporate Affairs function providing legal advice and support for the business aspects of those functions. Prepares legal documents such as contracts, correspondence (e.g., to regulatory agencies), both independently and for review, approval, and use by Legal Affairs management. Independently negotiates contracts and other issues with third parties (vendors, etc.)

Finance
Acts as lead legal advisor for Finance groups supporting Daiichi Sankyo Administrative and Commercial and R&D/Global Finance; support the Treasury role as well (excluding Travel group and insurance issues) providing legal advice and support for the business aspects of those functions. Prepares legal documents such as contracts, correspondence (e.g., to regulatory agencies), both independently and for review, approval, and use by Finance management. Independently negotiates contracts and other issues with third parties (vendors, etc.).

IT
Acts as lead legal advisor for Information Technology groups across the Corporation providing legal advice and support for the business aspects of those functions. Prepares legal documents such as contracts, correspondence (e.g., to regulatory agencies), both independently and for review, approval, and use by IT management. Independently negotiates contracts and other issues with third parties (vendors, etc.) Assess security and technical provisions of contracts from other business functions with IT and systems components. Act as liaison to Litigation Counsel regarding various IT systems.

Compliance
Acts as lead legal advisor for Compliance function providing legal advice and support for the business aspects of those functions. Prepares legal documents such as contracts, correspondence (e.g., to regulatory agencies), both independently and for review, approval, and use by Compliance department management. Independently negotiates contracts and other issues with third parties (vendors, etc.) Provide all necessary legal support to the Compliance Department in maintaining an effective compliance program (including legal support for and review of policies, training, monitoring and auditing projects) and support to maintain compliance with the Corporate Integrity Agreement through its completion.

Acts as legal advisor for other assigned corporate business and functional areas of the Daiichi Sankyo Administrative and Commercial function of the Company.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will be able to meet the qualifications below with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Education/Experience:
  • B.A. or B.S. from 4-year college or university of recognized standing.
  • J.D. from law school of recognized standing, and Bar admission. Must also be eligible to practice law in the state of New Jersey (either licensed in NJ or limited in-house license) and maintain such license in good standing at all times.
  • 8+ years post-law school experience, including 5+ years minimum, 7+ years preferred pharmaceutical industry experience, particularly supporting specific assigned business areas in contracting, general legal advice, policy development and/or review, etc. in specific business support functions (e.g., HR, IT, Compliance Program, etc.) in an in-house capacity, as a legal consultant, and/or at a law firm in a practice group focusing on pharmaceutical industry and/or specific corporate business functions.
