The Global Protein Sciences group at AbbVie is seeking a highly-motivated research scientist to join a dynamic core team supporting biologics drug-discovery. The applicant must have diverse experience in purification of antibody or engineered protein therapeutics. The candidate should have proficiency in all standard bioprocess and chromatography techniques, and have a demonstrated strong ability to effectively drive process development activities. As a creative problem solver, the individual should be proficient in overcoming issues (i.e. solubility, aggregation, recovery, purity, etc) with challenging therapeutic proteins. The applicant should be familiar in advanced bioanalytical and biophysical characterization techniques.

The applicant will be working in a Discovery organization at AbbVie. She/he should be able to work independently while contributing in a team environment, and manage several projects simultaneously. She/he needs to stay current with applicable internal/external scientific literature and apply new information in innovative ways to successfully complete work assignments. The applicant should be able to analyze, document, and report data concisely and rigorously. She/he should possess excellent communication skills and be proficient in presenting in front of groups.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Purification of antibodies, bispecifics, and other novel biologics formats to support therapeutic area drug discovery projects
  • Independently develop new purification protocols, identify and resolve product and production related issues
  • Champion new technologies to achieve project goals
  • Communicate and actively engage with discovery scientists, collaborators, and outside vendors
  • Analyze, document, and report data concisely and rigorously
  • Participate and present at meetings



Position will be hired based on level of experience

  • Bachelors or Masters in biochemistry, biophysics, chemical engineering, or related field with typically 5-7+ (BS) or 2-5+ (MS) years of experience
  • A proven record of success in the purification, and characterization of mammalian proteins, including antibodies, antibody fragments, bispecifics, and novel protein therapeutics
  • Proficient in the use of various chromatography techniques (Protein A/G, HIC, CHT, IEX, SEC, etc), chromatography systems (AKTA Pure, AKTA Pilot, AKTA Purifier), unit operations (Filtration, TFF), analytical instruments (Waters HPLC/UPLC, Endotoxin Reader, CE-SDS, etc), and protein characterization (SDS-PAGE, UV/Vis, Mass spectrometry etc)
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance protein production capabilities through identification of key technology improvements, innovation, and/or problem solving
  • Advanced bioanalytical and biophysical characterization of proteins is desired
