Job Details

We Are Genetic Navigators bringing together passionate, creative and dedicated professionals to join a rapidly-growing startup on our mission to translate novel genetic insights into lifesaving medicines. We are integrating human genetics and functional genomics to decode the mysteries of genetic modifiers, leading us to new medicines we'll develop for a range of severe diseases.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated individual with a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry to join our dynamic and highly-collaborative medicinal chemistry team in the pursuit of novel small molecules to treat a diverse range of diseases. The successful candidate will design and synthesize novel chemical entities optimized for potency, selectivity, pharmacokinetics and in vivo efficacy, evaluate HTS data to identify promising hit compounds for follow up, collaborate effectively with team members across disciplines, present project results and strategy in key company meetings, and oversee the work of internal and external chemists. In this hands-on role, the scientist will execute complex chemistry synthesis to aid drug discovery programs and work with project leads to advance compounds.

Your Role in Navigating The Maze:
  • You will plan and execute the synthesis, purification, and characterization of complex small molecules.
  • Design novel chemical entities in alignment with project goals.
  • Integrate and utilize modern medicinal chemistry principles and tools.
  • Integrate cutting-edge synthetic chemistry approaches
  • You will advance drug discovery programs by interacting with other chemists, biologists and external collaborators to understand and optimize DMPK and in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties.
  • Contribute effectively to patent, report and scientific publication writing.
  • You will employ sound judgment in the evaluation and strategic decision making around HTS screening data or literature hits.
  • You will effectively manage or mentor junior medicinal chemistry research colleagues and external chemists.

Your Navigation Tools:
  • PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or equivalent discipline is required, with postdoctoral research and/or 2+ years industry experience preferred; or MS with 5+ years industry experience
  • Strong chemical synthesis experience as demonstrated through publication record or industry achievements
  • A collaboration oriented approach to experiments and a hands-on, can-do attitude
  • Experience contributing to the progression from initial hit to clinical candidate is a plus
  • Strong desire to leverage chemistry for impact at the interface of genetics, functional genomics, and biology.
  • Excellent scientific expertise in organic synthesis and conversant with the current literature.
  • Detail oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills is a must.

Company

Maze Therapeutics is translating novel genetic insights into lifesaving medicines, through an approach that integrates human genetics and functional genomics. Advances in these areas have enabled us to decode the mysteries of genetic modifiers in a range of severe diseases, which we aim to turn into medicines that mimic protective mutations.

What are genetic modifiers?

Despite an understanding of the genetic basis for many diseases, it remains a mystery why some people with a disease-causing mutation never get sick. This is often due to genes elsewhere in our DNA that affect the severity of disease and can provide a natural form of protection.

The Maze approach

Dramatic advances in human genetics and functional genomics now enable us to decode the mysteries of genetic modifiers in a range of severe diseases. Today, we believe we can systematically identify genetic modifiers and turn these insights into medicines. We have assembled a world-class team to realize this vision, including creative scientific pioneers, experienced company builders and biotech industry leaders.
