The Head of R&D Business Capabilities is accountable for enabling R&D planning, operations, and decision making by equipping asset development teams, functional staff, and senior leaders with industry-leading project, portfolio, and clinical study management tools, methodologies, analyses, business process design, performance measurement, and consultative support. The R&D Business Capabilities Team is part of the R&D Strategy and Planning (RDSP) division, which is accountable for R&D business strategy & operations, operating model transformation, drug development project & portfolio management (PPM), governance management, and learning. The Head of R&D Business Capabilities reports to the Executive Director, RDSP R&D Capabilities.

In collaboration with enterprise teams, the Head of R&D Business Capabilities will:
  • Be accountable for the business strategy and stewardship of planning systems that enable core R&D activities and processes such as:
    • Cross-functional drug development project management
    • Clinical protocol and study operations management
    • Capacity management, resource management, and resource forecasting
    • Budgeting, cost planning, and cost forecasting
    • Project, operational, and portfolio scenario planning
    • Reporting and dashboarding
    • Operational data quality and metrics
  • Develop the long- and short-term R&D Business Capability vision and strategy, and operating model to achieve it
  • Proactively engage senior-level business stakeholders to determine and ensure that priority, business-critical needs are addressed
  • Prioritize and manage the R&D Business Capabilities book of work, focusing internal and external resources on business-critical activities
  • Measure and continuously improve the health and utility of R&D Business Capabilities, operational performance of the processes they enable, and business value delivered
  • Ensure the business requirements of the R&D planning system user community are met
  • Ensure minimal disruption to R&D Business Capability functionality and services provided through routine monitoring, maintenance, and upgrades
  • Identify synergies and embed best practices across the R&D Business Capabilities team and with similar teams across the enterprise
  • Ensure alignment with R&D and enterprise initiatives, business capabilities, and solutions to avoid negative downstream impacts and enable broader business priorities
  • Monitor the external landscape to evaluate and embed best practices related to R&D business strategy and operations enablement
  • The Head of R&D Business Capabilities will manage a team of 5 - 8 business capability leads and specialists, and work as part of an integrated and matrixed team comprising RDSP, Information Technology, Business Insights and Analytics, Finance, Human Resources, and Global Procurement team members to deliver R&D business solutions. Accordingly, it is critical that the candidate has demonstrated effective and efficient partnership with both internal and external partners.


Requirements:
  • Undergraduate (BA/BS) degree required; PhD or MBA degree preferred
  • 10 years of professional experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical industry
  • Management consulting experience preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated strength in assessing business-critical needs, developing business strategy, translating strategy into operating models and actionable plans, managing program execution, and delivering measureable business value
  • Strong experience with business process design and performance measurement
  • Strong business acumen and comfort in agile delivery and learning environment
  • Capable of bringing structure to vaguely defined problems while using creative yet pragmatic problem-solving approaches and execution management
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong presentation, facilitation, and executive-level messaging skills
  • Ability to build relationships and influence, and drive organizational engagement
  • Strong team leadership, mentoring, and people development & inclusion skills
  • Understanding of project, portfolio, resource, cost, and budget management
  • Understanding of agile development methodologies and technology, analytics, & business intelligence solution design, development, testing, and lifecycle management
  • Digital and PPM technology acumen preferred but not required
  • Planisware, Oracle, Veeva, Spotfire, Tableau, & Medidata experience preferred but not required
