Retrophin is rare disease biotech company in San Diego with a shared mission of identifying, developing and delivering life-changing therapies to people living with rare diseases. We have an exciting portfolio of both marketed products and late stage development projects: Our commercially available products Thiola, Cholbam and Chenodal are registered for cystinuria, bile acid synthesis disorders and gallstones; our late-stage development product sparsentan has the potential to become the new standard of care for patients living with Focal Segmental Glomerular Sclerosis (FSGS) and Immunoglobin A Nephropathy (IgAN) and is currently being studied in two Ph3 programs with anticipated data read-out in 2021.

Position Summary

The Executive Director, Head of Global Product Strategy is responsible for the development of the overarching global product strategies to optimize the potential of clinical stage development products at Retrophin. This includes the launch planning of Ph3 product sparsentan for the different geographies and countries by directing the cross-functional product leadership team in the development and execution of a single integrated strategy. Additionally, this role will be working closely with the business development team in identifying, assessing and acquiring external innovation.

Critical elements for this role include a proven track-record of preparing blockbuster product(s) for global launches, the ability to synthesize the evolving external environment and stakeholder needs - centralizing the patient journey - into strategic imperatives to optimize the product potential, and exemplify influencing skills in cross-functional leadership to set and achieve strategic deliverables.

Essential Functions
  • The Executive Director of Global Product Strategy serves as co-leader for the cross-functional team with accountability for the global product strategy throughout the product lifecycle
  • Delivers an integrated product strategy which considers the near and long-term opportunity assessment, critical challenges to overcome and formulating strategic imperatives
  • Partners with regional business owners in defining the guiding principles for launch planning deliverables and responsibilities (L-18/12/6/0 months)
  • Works closely with regional business owners, thought leaders and patient advocacy groups; integrating local and regional insights into opportunity and investment assessments
  • Provides strategic options with benefit/risk trade-offs to inform executive investment decisions
  • Generates high-quality and focused communication of program progress, remaining needs and recommendations to the Portfolio Strategy Team
  • Accountable for geography/country assessments in determining which markets to commercialize and what model to utilize; responsible for markets that may have no GM oversight
  • Accountability and direction for product long range planning process, assumptions and global product P&L
  • Partners with business development in identifying, assessing and acquiring external innovation
  • Exceptional commercial leadership and cross-functional team effectiveness skills
  • Proven track-record of preparing recent blockbuster products for global launches
  • Highly experienced with formulating integrated cross-functional strategies


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or Life Sciences discipline. Advanced degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and applicable experience may be considered.
  • 12+ years of related experience in the biotechnology industry, with commercial and/or marketing roles in specialty, nephrology or rare disease preferred; at least 6 years' experience in a commercial leadership role
  • Commercial experience in the US and Europe
  • Strong scientific acumen and understanding of clinical medicine, preferably nephrology
  • Solid understanding of the pharmaceutical end-to-end commercialization process
  • Strong communicator with executive presence and stellar presentation skills
  • Proven track-record of delivering results through effective team and peer leadership
  • Hands-on mentality, ability to work in a smaller company with fast-paced environment
  • Excellent leadership skills, collaboration, influencing and communication (both written and presentation) is required
  • Experience in communicating technical data both internally and externally to non-technical audiences is required
  • Experience in developing and gaining management approval for value-based scientific strategies and tactics to meet both commercial and scientific objectives for a given product or therapeutic area is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, with a professional demeanor and the ability to interact with all levels of management, colleagues and vendors.
  • Ability to travel US and internationally
