Job Description

Specific Responsibilities:

Gilead seeks a highly motivated, creative and collaborative laboratory scientist to support research efforts to discover and develop novel therapies for the treatment of chronic metabolic and fibrotic diseases, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The successful candidate will participate in discovery and translational research activities aimed at identifying and characterizing novel therapeutic targets. The successful candidate will work within an established group focused on metabolic/fibrotic diseases and will interface with multidisciplinary project teams.

 

Gilead is a world leader in antiviral research having developed small molecule compounds that have revolutionized the treatment of HIV, HCV, and HBV. Over the last 5 years, Gilead has significantly broadened its scope to encompass unmet medical needs in chronic fibrotic diseases and has developed a pipeline of investigational compounds which are currently in clinical trials for NASH. Our research team is intensively engaged in the discovery and development of small molecules, antibody therapeutics and combination therapies for patients with liver fibrosis. This position provides an exciting opportunity to have high-impact participation in the growth of these new therapeutic areas within an established research group focused on developing drugs for fibrotic diseases.

 

Specific responsibilities:

 

• Independently design/develop, perform and manage experiments on cell lines, primary human cell cultures and tissue to support validation of novel therapeutics.

 

• Proactively troubleshoot technical issues and recommend potential corrective actions based on personal observations and literature searches.

 

• Presents results of work, interprets data, and draws conclusions regarding presented material and nature of work.

 

• Assess therapeutic potential and mechanism of action of new drugs by analysis of tissues and plasma from pre-clinical rodent models.

 

• Maintains familiarity with scientific literature and applies knowledge to research projects.

 

• Work with CROs and academic collaborators to manage/co-ordinate sample analysis and/or in vivo preclinical studies

 

• Uses strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to communicate objectives and results.

 

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

 

• 9+ years of experience with BS degree in a related scientific discipline.

 

• 8+ years of experience with MS degree in a related scientific discipline.

 

• The candidate must have experience in using and understanding modern molecular biology and biochemical techniques including methods to assess intracellular signaling (immunoblot/immunoprecipitation), gene expression (RNASeq, RT-PCR), gene knock-down/knock-in (shRNA, CRISPR/Cas9), and tissue analysis. Extensive in vitro cell biology experience including isolation and culturing of primary immune cells and development of novel cell-based assays is required. Prior experience working with FACS and immune cell culture is a plus. Prior knowledge and research experience in immunometabolism and metabolic disease is preferred. Strong analytical and computer skills are required, including proficiency with basic data analysis programs (Excel, GraphPad Prism, sequence analysis software etc.) and application of statistics. Applicants must have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), and strong organizational and planning skills. The successful candidate must be able to manage multiple projects at any given time, and work in a fast-paced, cross-functional and highly collaborative team environment.
