AveXis is advancing cutting-edge science, starting with our proprietary gene therapy for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). AveXis, a Novartis company, is dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product is a proprietary gene therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric patients with SMA. In addition to developing a treatment for SMA, AveXis also plans to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

AveXis is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate III to join the growing, dynamic multidisciplinary Analytical Development department. The person will contribute to the development and optimization of phase-appropriate bioassays for the lot release, stability testing and characterization of drug substance/drug product by reporting to Ph.D. lead scientist in AD-Bioassay group. In addition, he/she will participate in exploratory studies driving the evaluation of state-of-the-art new technology platforms, and innovative upgrades for existing assay platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to execution of experiments for proof-of-concept studies and assay development/optimization
  • Participate in planning, execution and data analysis to support method qualification and validation activities
  • Contribute to the drafting of technical documents, including SOPs, assay forms, study protocols and reports
  • Ensure timely documentation of experiments performed, meeting appropriate GxP standards and communicate experimental outcomes and data analysis in real time to help derive conclusions and planning for next steps
  • Present experimental data in group/departmental meetings
  • Support method transfer to the internal QC group and/or external CROs to facilitate successful downstream performance of assays


Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Cell Biology or closely related discipline, such as Immunology
  • B.S. with 5-6 or M.S. with 1-3 years of biopharma industry experience with knowledge and hands-on experience with some of the following analytical methods
    • For example, Western Blot, ELISA, MSD, ELISpot, Flow Cytometry/FACS, Luminescence/Fluorescence plate-based assays, Immunofluorescence microscopy, High Content Imaging
  • High level of proficiency with Cell Culture standard methods such as aseptic technique, cell culture media preparation, maintenance of mammalian cell lines and cryopreservation
  • Highly motivated with "can do" attitude, high accountability and learning spirit
  • Demonstrated proficiency to troubleshoot/optimize assay performance
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, team-orientated environment with aggressive timelines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior knowledge and/or experience related to GxP (e.g., GDP, GMP) environments and analytical and/or statistical software (e.g., JMP, Softmax Pro, XLfit, Gen5 etc.), is not required, but a plus
