AveXis is advancing cutting-edge science, starting with our proprietary gene therapy for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). We are in the midst of an incredible journey and are looking for passionate individuals to join us on this important mission.

AveXis, a Novartis company, is dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product is a proprietary gene therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric patients with SMA. In addition to developing a treatment for SMA, AveXis also plans to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

AveXis is seeking a seasoned trade compliance expert to lead all areas of import and export activities and ensure the company is in compliance with worldwide regulatory agency and internal requirements related to these activities. The scope of this role will include logistics and manufacturing areas for all AveXis sites, markets and development centers in which such type of transactions take place.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain internal global Customs and Trade Compliance (CTC) policies and standards documents utilizing Novartis requirements and keep them up to date according to latest legal regulations.
  • Ensure standards and policies are implemented locally in each entity, through the deployment of an effective trade compliance program to maintain and continuously improve customs and trade compliance standards.
  • Perform audits and risk assessments. Identify potential areas of non-conformity. Identify changes which could lead to financial benefits or limited risks within the scope of CTC and implement working with relevant stake holders.
  • Implement the CTC governance structure ensuring clear accountabilities and responsibilities for global, regional and local teams. Ensure compliance with all local requirements in markets where AveXis is selling.
  • Drive cross functional alignment and consistency in approaches across Legal, Technical Operation, Commercial Operations, Finance, Tax/ Funds Flow, Purchasing, etc. Ensure alignment and best practice sharing with Novartis. Represent Technical Operations on the Trade Sanctions Practice Team. Create awareness at all levels of the organization for trade compliance topics.
  • Develop and implement training programs for the CTC community.
  • Develop and establish effective and integrated KPIs/ metrics measurement and reporting systems.
  • Define and implement a vendor strategy for service providers (e.g. customs brokers).
  • Keep up to date with regulatory requirements and changes. Represent AveXis and our interests in trade organizations.
  • Identify savings opportunities and cost avoidance within global trade operations.
  • Design processes and tools including data management and ERP functionality to effectively and efficiently implement standards in day-to-day operations. Provide a framework/operating model for compliance in the form of tools and templates.


Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Law.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in roles with global responsibility in a multi-national industry or minimum 15 years' experience in an operational customs and trade role with regional responsibility in EU, North America, Asia, etc.
  • Preferred experience in Health Care, Consumer Goods, Chemical or other process industry. Cell and gene therapy experience a plus.
