Summary:
This role is primarily responsible for all aspects of histology in the Skeletal Diseases group, from processing fresh tissue through creating reports that outline, summarize and interpret results. Additionally, this role is responsible for ensuring all samples and data are catalogued and easily obtained by a variety of employees within the R&D area. This position will also include conducting in vivo experiments and in vitro assays of samples. The ideal candidate will be flexible, innovative and able to function effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

• Designs and executes histology processing and other experiments based on protocols provided by literature, seminars, and other scientific staff. Specifically, in this role, this majority of the role is focused on processing of fresh tissues, paraffin sectioning, routine histological staining, immunohistochemistry, RNA scope, slide scanning, sample and slide cataloguing, analyzing and collating data

• Requires the ability to work independently, having excellent mastery of the technical skills in the above field, a knowledge of proper controls, an ability to develop a research strategy, and evidence of a creative and critical approach to scientific problem solving.

• Must be capable of organizing efforts, correcting the plan based upon results and eventually reporting the results to management either verbally or in writing.

• Learns safety requirements of his/her laboratory. Attends safety training. Participates as a member of laboratory safety committees as assigned. Maintains complete and accurate laboratory safety records consistent with company and legal requirements. Recognizes potential safety problems and takes action to correct them.

• Suggests modifications to protocols or alternative protocols.

• Introduces new ideas on how to design, execute, and analyze particular experiments.

• Effectively and independently operates a range of laboratory instrumentation.

• Capable of managing time effectively

• Reads and begins to critically evaluate the literature in a specialized scientific field.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Running of other assays in the lab such as Western, ELISAs, FACS, cell culture when needed.

• Helping with in vivo studies.

• Participates effectively as a team member within his/her own laboratory. Works effectively with people in other laboratories.

• Maintains cleanliness in own work area and in communal work areas.

• Maintains stocks of supplies and maintains equipment.

• Communicates with appropriate laboratory support personnel.
Requirements:
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from an accredited college or university and seven (7) years of post-degree laboratory experience necessary. An MS degree is also acceptable.
Experience with all aspects of histology is essential, prior experience with histology of bone would be desirable. This role is responsible for processing, sectioning, staining and analyzing samples obtained from murine models.
Experience with animal experimentation (dosing, implants, surgeries, fluid and tissue collection), maintaining tissue repositories and molecular assays (e.g. ELISA) is highly desirable.
Additional requirements include maintaining equipment, documentation, analyzing and providing regular updates of experiment results
Presents concise activity summaries at work group meetings. Maintains electronic laboratory notebooks in accordance with company policy and legal requirements.
Research Specialists at this level are required to be independent in the execution of experiments. Their ability to design experiments and interpret results allows them to increasingly pursue projects that incorporate a more diverse set of skills.
