Job Details

The Team Leader, Cell Therapy Discovery works within the Cell Therapy Research Team, reporting to the Director of Cell Therapy Discovery. The Team Leader manages a team responsible for carrying out research projects contributing to development of Cell Therapy products in accordance with Precisions goals. The Team Leader position is lab and office-based and will share facilities and resources within the Cell Therapy Discovery team.

  • Design and direct the execution of experiments pertaining to Cell Therapy
    • Coordinate with Director of Cell Therapy Discovery and Senior team members to plan experiments that need to be carried out to achieve Precisions goals for developing T Cell Therapies
    • Hands-on execution of experiments related to T Cell Therapy if required to meet goals of the company and department
    • Coordinate with Research Assistants, Research Associates and Scientists to plan and carry out experiments to achieve Precisions goals for developing Cell Therapies
      • Plan and assign work for direct reports in support of the Cell Therapy teams goals
        • Identify aspects of experiments to be performed by direct reports as part of a larger ongoing experiment
        • Identify areas where self-directed work can be performed and ensure that the appropriate training and support are in place to successfully complete these independent experiments
      • Oversee that work is being correctly performed, analyzed, recorded and reported
    • Report results to Director of Cell Therapy and Senior Management
      • Share new data, file reports as needed
      • Assist in publishing or presenting data as needed
      • Provide data and write-ups to support patent applications and regulatory filings
  • Responsible for training, development and management of direct reports, including setting clear responsibilities and goals, holding regular performance discussions and reviews and identifying training and development opportunities
  • Responsible for championing company initiatives and partnering with other groups at the company to ensure cross-functional alignment
  • Assist in staffing of Cell Therapy Team
    • Serve as Hiring manager for future direct reports
      • Responsible for onboarding new laboratory personnel, managing training of new personnel in basic and advanced laboratory techniques
  • Assist in the translation of Cell Therapy research projects into feasible and commercially viable therapeutic programs
    • Provide timelines and cost analyses relating to the CAR-T production process
    • Meet with potential academic and industry partners to discuss areas of common interest and potential contract work, collaborations and partnerships
  • Represent Precision BioSciences and the Cell Therapy Discovery Group
    • Attend conferences and other meetings outside of Precision BioSciences, presenting data when appropriate
    • Attend meetings with collaborators and potential collaborators and actively participate in research collaborations
    • Present research findings, timelines and plans during regular and ad-hoc meetings
  • Assist in general operation of the Cell Culture facility
    • Coordinate with Operations and Facilities personnel to ensure:
      • Shared resources are utilized appropriately between teams
      • Consumables are ordered and stocked as needed
      • Cells and other reagents are available for experiments as needed

  • Proactively raise issues and concerns, while bringing solutions to the table whenever possible
  • Be a champion of change, supporting company decisions, helping teams to understand decisions made even if they feel differently
  • Partner with HR on their teams performance management (corrective actions, PIPs, terminations, performance reviews), professional development, employee relations, keeping up to date and communicating company policies and expectations
  • Participate and support company events (speaking, presenting, meetings, trainings, etc.)

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.

Education/Experience:
  • PhD in cellular & molecular biology/immunology with a minimum of 5 years related academic or industry experience and/or training or;
  • MS in cellular & molecular biology/immunology with a minimum of 8 years related academic or industry experience and/or training or;
  • BS in cellular & molecular biology/immunology with 10+ years related academic or industry experience

Required:
  • Management experience required, consisting of managing a minimum of two concurrent direct reports for greater than two years; experience managing larger groups strongly preferred; experience with Matrix Management or hybrid-Matrix a plus
  • Experience with multiparameter flow cytometric analysis and accompanying data analysis software proficiency

Preferred:
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with cell culture and cell-based assays of lymphocyte function, including proliferation, cytotoxicity and cytokine release assays
  • Experience and knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including: PCR, restriction digestion & cloning, primer design, plasmid isolation and analysis, bacterial transformation and screening, extraction of genomic DNA, DNA sequencing and analysis and proficiency with accompanying data analysis software
  • Familiarity and experience with siRNA, shRNA, protein engineering and gene editing
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific journals; ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies ormembers of the business community
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadraticequations and permutations
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determinationof test reliability and validity, analysis

Travel Requirements
  • This position requires some travel (5-10%), primarily for scientific conferences, meetings with potential partners, training activities.

  • This is an office-based position located at the main headquartersin downtown Durham, NC.
